Yes Carlo, it's Smooth Operator by Sade. How curious. In a multiverse where all things exist simultaneously, one thread could travel into another thread and make this song a reality. Is it my future? Will time decide to change my fate? Perhaps I'll be a stream operator - living, loving, and having a blast! _________________ "Let's make noise for peace." - Kijjaz |

If you need to drum up presenters, presumably at the moment you will only attract offers from those who can commit to a regular weekly / monthly slot.
Perhaps there could be a regular slot for guest presenters. A coordinator person would keep track of who can do when, and work out a schedule. Bob presents his electro-grind favourites one week, while Miranda is all lined up the following week to delight listeners with her recordings of bovine mating calls cross-modulated through a box of cutlery.
I don't know what technical cleverness has to be done to 'enable' each presenter, perhaps that would be a limiting factor.

dovdimus, we have multiple public ports set up for this sort of thing, and these can be routed to the main port when required, so really the only thing that's needed is people who want to do a show and all they need is some material and some streaming software (edcast for pc, nicecast for mac) _________________ Jez

And then, once you have the software, and you have no clue how it works ... go to http://bluehell.electro-music.com/radio_info/manage_public.php - it will ask you for a user name and a password (both are public, yes that word, yes literally) - be sure to follow the links there to read up a bit before clicking on anything. Then the next thing to do would be to report in the chat I guess ... for additional help and to schmooze with you audience. _________________ Jan

And presumably someone to coordinate the eager beavers to ensure they don't all start broadcasting at the same time! _________________ This message was brought to you from Beyond The Grave. |

What eager beavers? Not that many people are interested to stream
Anyway, there are some tools to deal with that too. _________________ Jan

I think this raises another important question.
If you were volunteering to do a programme, you'd be thinking about what music to play. What is the situation regarding permission to play music?
Apologies if this has been discussed before, if the answers are elsewhere please just post a link.
Do we assume that anything uploaded to Online Music is fair game? (And if not, is it possible to add a tick box to the uploader control to enable people to specify at the time of upload whether EM radio can play it?) What about links from the Online Music forum?
And does anyone know what is the situation with broadcasting music on e.g. MySpace? Presumably the music is placed there for promotional purposes (so I can't imagine why someone wouldn't want it played on the radio), but do we have knowledge of the legal ins and outs? _________________ This message was brought to you from Beyond The Grave. |

you really need to get permission from the artists before you broadcast their music, unless this permission is explicity contained in the post
this isn't always easy and could explain why most of the people doing shows perform their own music
a good way to get music would be to start a thread to ask for submissions _________________ Jez

Thanks for the response. I think the combination of online music forum and radio station could be a really powerful one, if it were clearer whether an uploaded track could be played.
Is my suggestion about providing functionality requiring people uploading music to say if they give permission worth looking into? I don't know how easy it is to customise these CMS doodahs. _________________ This message was brought to you from Beyond The Grave. |
I like "stream operator", sounds like some cybernetic robocop who's job is to police the intergalactic transwarp superhighway or something.
It so happens that Symmetry scored a Sci-fi story I wrote called "Space Cop" about a virtual world were sentient programs patrol cyberspace in order to deter cybercrime.
I've already given State Machine permission to play my "Room 103" CD on his Soldering Musician program and would love to submit "Algorhythm: Music from Space Cop".

Thanks for your response Mosc. Is it possible this could be made a little clearer?
Conditions of use wrote: | By posting music and/or sound recordings on the forum of electro-music.com, permission is implicitly granted to electro-music.com to play such media on the site's streaming radio service hosted on radio.electro-music.com. |
I would imagine this to cover files physically uploaded to EM's servers, but I'm not sure whether it covers a music file directly linked to from a forum page.
And what about a link to a page containing music?
The issue is the meaning of the word 'posting' I believe. _________________ This message was brought to you from Beyond The Grave. |
