Subject description: ..... Yes, four of these voices on a single circuit card assembly .....
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

NOTE : ITEM BELOW IS TEMPORARILY SOLD OUT UNTIL FALL OF 2010

The Bass++ is a powerful drum voice designed by Thomas Henry with several front panel controls and jacks to control the various drum parameters. These controls can give the Bass++ a different sound at any given moment from deep bass to tom-tom to wood block sounds.

After Dan “Antman” Lavin approached me about distributing the Bass++ and exchanging alternate ideas about PCB configurations, he and I settled on, and thought, it would be a rather cool idea to have more than one complete Bass++ drum module available on a single circuit board. Keeping each Bass++ independent of each other was an important goal, sharing only the circuit and panel power connections among them. This would create a fairly complete electronic drum “set”.

Having each drum voice independent allows the builder to built one, two, three, or four modules depending on their needs. The number of Bass++ drum modules we agreed to reside on a single circuit board would be four and thus the Quad Bass++ was born. Now that was a handy circuit we thought. Personally, when building drum modules, I had always built more than one and it only made sense that more than one should reside on a single circuit board. This saves space and the trouble of mounting several boards in your cabinet.

After we settled on the idea, we asked for, and received, the blessings from Thomas Henry and Scott Stites to go ahead with the Quad Bass++ project. Dan began the PC board layout process. I was to proof the artwork, and make any necessary changes. I would also create any special silkscreen markings on the PCB to aid in construction, and create the documentation. sMs Audio Electronics will be producing and distributing the Quad Bass++ PCB. Each module or “voice” would need 9 front panel control potentiometers, 3 jacks, one panel mounted LED, parts for the PC board, and cable hardware. The board is small enough, approximately 4.75” square, to allow the user to build it into any standard enclosure.

I have attached the latest revision (REV E) of documentation but you may want to check here every now and then to see if you have the latest. It will always be at the latest revision posted right here on this first posting in this thread.

The picture shown is the first built prototype and is now fully functional and have tested all four voices.

If you want to listen to examples of the Quad Bass++ module, then be sure to check out my demo on this Tuesday's "The Soldering Musician" radio show on January 19, 2010 at 6 PM US Eastern Time (23:00 GMT).

Bill,

Love the temporary control panel box! You might want to offer that as a kit, too!

Go Bill and Dan! Very Happy
Very cool project guys. Will listen to the show to hear examples. Have to finish some modules first, but then its time for the drums! Smile
Nice temporary case Bill. That truly has the DIY spirit.

Bill,
I missed your show on the 19th (always busy on Tuesdays!). Will it be posted in the radio archives?

Sure, I will get that together this evening and post it. I have work to do in the studio this evening anyway.

Here are a few more photos of the Q-Bass++ prototype board. I will also post the Q-Bass++ sound examples demo portion of my radio show from January 19, 2010 right here in this thread.

Here are some examples of using just one voice of this four voice drum synthesizer. It runs for about 15 to 20 minutes with narration.

Great demo Bill! I'm glad you did it and not me! My demo would've been more pedestrian. You really pushed the capabilities of this device. Maybe a Quad unit wasn't big enough! Oh well, I guess folks can always get 2 units!

Thanks Dan. I tell you this is only one voice to. One can do a really nice mix of assorted sounds in one take using all 4 voices. I wish I had more control panels for the demonstration.

I would like to create a FRAC/Blacet style panel for these. Are there any interested in a panel of this type? I will most likely design one anyhow and post the Front Panel Express design file. The panel would be for a single voice so 1 to 4 would be required to build a system. If they are cheap enough, I will stock and sell them for anyone who would like to have one.

I would be interested in a Frac or Euro panel for all 4 voices.

In a somewhat related topic originally posted here and subsequently split to a new topic, Stephen Giles posted a question on how to modify an EH Space Drum. Please do take a look here:

OK guys, this is very exciting and sounds like a board run could be really worth it Wink I have been meaning to do just one thing and that decide on some breakouts for "benders" as I may have mentioned before. I shall do this in as short a time as possible. Work has been busy for me Shocked

Thanks and keep your eyes on the thread as I post new news.
