yes, don goes *way* back and has a long, storied history in the development of American electronic music. the unfortunate thing is that he's very underrecognized for what he's done in the field. i finally met him at last year's e-m festival after knowing him through his work and through correspondence via my two electronic music magazines ('i/e' & 'e/i') in the 90s & 00s. he's a very talented and proficient musician with a completely intuitive knowledge of the keyboard, electronic & otherwise, and has a great command of chords, textures, melodies, etc.
i'm thrilled to have don participate at one of our otp events this year; it'll be a special evening, and i encourage you to come up and be a part of it if possible. _________________ DARREN BERGSTEIN

I am pleased to announce 4 more additions to OTP’s eclectic 2010 lineup:
• April 3: JOSEF VAN WISSEM www.myspace.com/vanwissem
• April 10: ERALDO BERNOCCHI http://www.eraldobernocchi.net
• September 18: JASON SLOAN http://www.jasonsloan.com
• October 17: ERIK WOLLO http://www.wollo.com
Josef van Wissem’s instrument of choice, the lute, is not something one would associate being the ideal tool to interface with modern electronic apparatuses, but he synthesizes both contexts perfectly, yielding something akin to a modern digital “folk” music that combines van Wissem’s aural history within the subtle context of laptop software.
Eraldo Bernocchi is a musician of long-standing who has gone very underrecognized in the various EM communities. A founding member of the Italian post-industrial experimental outfit Sigillum S, Eraldo broke into international status signing to the Sub Rosa/Quatermass labels, releasing everything from dark IDM to drum ‘n’ bass to unclassifiable soundsc(r)apes. He has also collaborated with Harold Budd, Bill Laswell, Mick Harris and many others on the boundaries. He’s rarely, if ever, performed here in the States, which should make his OTP debut something special to see.
Jason Sloan produces ambient music in the finest Eno tradition (read: Music for Airports style, for some reference point) but his sonic environments are hardly static — he incorporates the vocabulary of microsound & process/glitch music as much as corporeal drift, yielding works uncanny in their ability to meld perfectly within the framework of both installation environments and performance spaces.
Erik Wollo continues to do amazing work that stretches borders & genres, augmenting his trademark lush sound with guitars as well as numerous electronics & batteries of synths. There is a compositional vitality and uniquely indigenous sensibility to his music that sets him leagues apart from Berlin School associates yet his varied approaches affords him the ability to collaborate with sympathetic artists such as Deborah Martin, Steve Roach and Frank van Bogaert. His upcoming new release on Projekt in a few months, Gateway, should go some way to further cementing his status as an artist of significance.
Mark your calendars. _________________ DARREN BERGSTEIN

ONE THOUSAND PULSES Feb 23 update |
|
|
I'm pleased to announce that Zombi member & synthesist Steve Moore will be performing @ OTP on Friday, October 1. Moore's work as one half of the duo Zombi has resulted in three albums of kinetic synth prog, but that doesn't mean the group is easy to pigeonhole—they're equally at home banging out a solid groove of sequencer headrush, which situates them somewhere between Ozric Tentacles (minus guitar), instrumental "cold wave" and the DFA crew. On his own, Moore's debut CD The Henge proclaimed itself a full-on contemporary synth classic that manages to meld Tangerine Dream's Zeit, Irmin Schmidt & Bruno Spoerri's Toy Planet and Heldon's Allez Teia into an epic thrillride for the senses. As further proof of his nomadic status, he's done remixes for dance acts such as Ursula 1000, and recently released a 12-inch on no bigger a techno bastion than Kompakt. Set the controls for the heart of the sun. http://www.stevemoore2600.com _________________ DARREN BERGSTEIN
