Here are the tracks of the third and (so far) last Commuter's Diary installment. The original thread for the show where I broadcast these tracks is here .

Each batch got longer, and this one clocked in a bit more than five quarters of an hour. As with most of the previous tracks, they track names contain the date (year, month, day in that order, in double digits), a character saying if the track was made in the morning ('a') or afternoon ('p'), and a sequence number, which is usually 1.

When I was putting together the mix for the show, I had this idea that I wanted to do a wacky kind of gameshow intro with some fast paced music, a main radio voice and a kind of sidekick voice with some effect. I made this at home, some time after I had made the last of the actual commuter's diary tracks. I'll start this thread with that track, since it started the show. If you want to hear the wacky voices, check out the big mix (in the linked thread in the previous post), I put some in at the end too.

sb101206_a1 worked well for kicking off the show I think, starting slow and building up.

sb101206_p1 has no drums or bass - I didn't know how to fit them in without breaking things. I try to leave out drums and/or bass every now and then, and allow the rythm of the melodies and sounds to work by themselves.

sb101207_a1 is a tune that I've had in my head for some years, and I took the opportunity to put it into the real world here. I'm not superhappy with the result (what I hear in my head is not what I hear when I listen to this recording), but it's ok enough for me to include it here. Funnily enough it ends on the same note as...

sb101207_p1, which is a nice pace to it.

sb101207_p2 is a bouncy track using a detuned saw sound with long release that I particularly like. Another track I'd like to combine with something so I could make it last longer.

sb101209_a1 is a longer track that starts off a bit like something I imagine could have been part of a c64 video game. I'm happy with this one.

sb101213_a1 is a crazy experimental thing. I wonder if I was mad at something when I stepped on the train...

sb101213_p1 has another flavour of detuned saws, I think I had a lot of that in this batch of tracks.

sb101214_p1 makes me think of small people sneaking around, quickly running between hiding spots like trees or pillars in a courtyard. I did some stick sounds by manually tapping the pads and leaving the quantization off - a neat trick.

Some pacing tracks here, before sb110104_a1 pairs a mourning harmonica with a booming bass, in a sad dance.

My first binary track, sb110110_p1 feels like the result of day at work gone wrong. shaking It ends in a nice but manic bleeping tumbledryer.

The next binary track - sb110111_a1 - is a song with vocals that I made up while walking to the train in the morning. I'll write a lyric so I can add the actual vocals one of these days.

sb110112_a1 is the longest commuter's diary track ever, at 5:44! It's a sombre thing, with a nice riff/arpeggio coming in after a minute or so. I'm a bit amazed that Nanostudio gives me this much variety in sounds, the main pad that runs throughout the track sounds really good I think.

sb110114_a1 breaks off a bit here. It's another use of detuned saw with long release. I'm very fond of this tune.

sb110117_a1 is a funky thing with a lead that uses an indeterminite scale. Cast off the shackles of scales!

sb110119_a1 does the funky-by-triplets thing again. Before I found out that sequencers could have a "swing" setting, I always made things swing by setting e.g. Protracker to use a 3/4 tempo and raising the BPM up high. Try it sometime! Smile

sb110120_a1 uses some mellow lines that I'm happy with. (yeah I know, you probably think this is Prozac-cheerfulness in the extreme, but well that's not the response I get everywhere Wink )

sb110121_a1 was an attempt to jazz things up a bit. I worked a lot on those drums, usually I make good use of the copy/paste feature. I think all of the bass was recorded live in one stretch too. I'm kind of happy with the result.

sb110124_a1 is my personal favourite track out of all the Commuter's Diary collections. I have a video planned out in my head for head, I need to get going with that one. The arpeggio that starts close to the beginning touches some spot in my mind, and makes me all melancholy and nostalgic for some reason I can't put my finger on.

The mood kind of carries on from previous tracks, over sb110125_a1 and onwards. I tended to use note sweeps and arpeggios a lot here.

..though sb110127_a1's bouncy start broke that off a bit...

...but sb110128_a1 carried it all the way home.

And that concludes the Commuter's Diary series of Nanostudio tracks made in the winter 2010-2011!

Heard all that were shorter than 1:22 (so far) - all lovely songs :-)
