In 1984 I began a project I called "Space Chanty." I wanted to do a Sci Fi concept album. I wrote some good songs for the project but not enough of them.

"Dear Mary" was a message by a crewman, dictated as the ship was leaving for a long voyage. It's one of the saddest songs I ever wrote. This instrumental treatment is not sad. The original lyrics were:

Dear Mary,

The ship is peaceful as we leave the atmosphere
The hum of engines is all that we can hear
The stars grow brighter and the black gets blacker still
I should get used to that but I guess I never will

Looks like a long one, the kind you always dread
Beyond the nebula, that's what the captain said
We're taking rations to an exploration crew
If the captain had his way, that's all we'd ever do

Explain to Jimmy; at least the best you can
He's so very young, I hope he can understand
Tell him I love him and hug him once for me
By the time that I get home he'll be as big as me

And listen Mary, I really understand
You're not the kind who can live long without a man
Just remember I love you and I will be back someday
Maybe then the three of us can find some other way

I gotta be going; I've got a job to do
One of us has to work; better me than you
I already miss you and we're hardly off the ground
Don't forget me now, I'll see you at touchdown
