Hello, my first post here.
I'm just starting to build my modular, based on yusynth and mfos mostly. I have a question about the cabinet dimensions. I want to have lots of modules, but i don't want to make one cabinet so big like the 22u or 66u. I want it to be easier to carry, so if i just want to play in a concert or something, i bring 1 or 2 cabinets. I thought i could do it 16u. But i'm new to the modular thing, so i didn't even know what the "u" meant. So i googled it, its a rack unit right? That is 44mm. But i downloaded yusynths panel silkscreens and they are like 54mm, the 2u are 10,6cm and other 2u are 10,9cm... Then i did 1190mm(the 22u cabinet) / 22, and the result is 54mm, so 1u = 54mm am i right? So if i want to make it 16u it should be something like 865mm right?

there's more Embarassed
Does it matter if i use alpha pots or regular cheap ones? Alpha ones are really expensive in my country.

thanks in advance

Hi there!

Well standard modular synth U's are not your typical rackmount units. I'm currently building some wonderful Yusynth designs, and units I used are called MU's (Moog units). These are used by synthesizers.com, Yusynth i believe and many other DIY or non-DIY modules.

Standard MU height is 8.75'', single MU module takes 2.125'' in width. Convert these into your needed units (I guess it's metric in Argentina) and you have it.

Me myself haven't built any cab yet, but gonna do this a bit wider. Say 2-3mm for each module, to avoid ''oops, the last one's not gonna squeeze in'' Very Happy

I thought ALHA ones are best from cheapest to buy. First I was wondering to use PEC's for my modules but considered how many I need them and realized that I'm gonna have to sell my garage to have those Shocked

Hope it helps. Cheeers!

Hey
thanks for the helpful answer

About the pots, alpha here are so expensive like pecs in your country. One pot is 5usd vs regular pot 0,80usd... I myself don't think that it'll affect the sound... if it's just a thing of smoothness and so, i don't care too much

Maybe shipping from USA or Taiwan (ALPHA's are produced there) would be not that expensive. Well it's up to you to look for better alternatives. Cause i don't order any parts in my country at all for the same reason. Except some regular decoupling caps or metal film resistors.

And pots really not gonna affect sound as far as I've encountered. It's only about the smoothness, feeling and lifetime of the pot.

And don't forget to upload some porn pics on how your project goes! Smile

Cheers!
