Subject description: Is it possible to sync the sequencer of a Korg Volca to a MFOS sequencer?

Hi,

As you can see it in my other posts I am soon going to build a MFOS synth and probably also a sequencer.

The thing is that I'd like to make live music with it and because of that would like to buy a Korg Volca Beats (an inexpensive but yet very nice drum machine).

It would be of course necessary to somehow sync the MFOS sequencer to the Korg Volca. Would that be possible?

The Korg Volca has a a Sync-In and a Sync-Out connector. The official specs don't help because they say that you can use them to sync the Volca to another Volca or other Korg product like for example the Monotribe. I also know that the Korg Volca can be synced using a Midi Clock from any other device, but of course the MFOS sequencers don't have MIDI.

I have seen some examples where people simply connect the Sync-Out of the Volca to the External Clock Input of a sequencer (example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUcb8-KO5f0) . Do you think it would work that easy with a MFOS sequencer?

Thanks for helping me,

Kind regards,
Daniel

Here's what the manual of the Korg Volca Beats says:

"SYNC IN/OUT Jacks:
Use these jacks with the included cable to connect the volca beats to a monotribe or other compatible equipment, such as an analog sequencer, and synchronise them. The SYNC OUT jack sends a 5 V pulse of 15ms at the beginning of each step. If the SYNC IN jack is connected, the internal step clock will be ignored and the volca beats sequencer will proceed through its steps according to the pulses that are input to this jack. You can use this jack to synchronise the volca beats' steps with pulses that are being output from the audio output of another analog sequencer."

That means that it is possible to sync the Korg Volca to another analog sequencer, so the question is now, if one of the MFOS sequencers has these specifications for the sync out.

Someone posted on Muff's today a piece they did with a Volca clocking an Echophon that was processing the Volca's output.

I've clocked my Volca Beats from one of my clocking modules, but I can't remember if it was the Echophon clock out or the TH LFO.

Do you mean you have synced the Volca to the Echophon? What kind of pulses does the Echophono send out?

If they are the same as the pulses from one of the MFOS sequencer it would mean that you could sync them by connecting the Clock Out of the sequencer to the Sync In of the Korg Volca, wouldn't it?

That would probably work in both ways, either the Volca receiving the clock signal from the sequencer or the Volca sending a clock signal to the sequencer through Sync Out.

I haven't done it, but someone over on Muffwiggler forum has. Join up if you haven't, and go look at the Volca Beats thread....
