Theremin as a gesture input device

So, I got 6 LeapMotion gesture 'controllers' for my students to use in multimedia input work including musical input and control of generative graphics in the planetarium.

It occurred to me that a theremin might be as good or better. Googling finds some papers that either cite theremins or did some experiments with them for gesture recognition. Anybody ever do this with a theremin, using it for non-traditional-theremin gesture input applications? There is a much bigger physical gesture space than with LeapMotion. Our university's music department has a theremin that apparently never gets used. It sets me to thinking.
