Hello!

I am running a Roland RS-09 through a Nord Micro Modular for effects processing.

Now, the RS-09 has a gate-output. So here is my question:

Is it ok to trigger an envelope-module in the Micro Modular with the gate-signal from the RS-09? In other words, will an analog gate signal do any harm to the A/D-convertrers in the Micro Modular?

If it is fine to do so, shall I run the signal from the audio-in-module directly into the gate-input of the envelpoe-module or is it better to put some logic- or audio-processing-module in the chain before the envelope-module?

Thanks to all Nord Modular Wizzards out there!

I can not find what the gate level output for the rs-09 is .. but it may be a bit high to put in directly ... which could be solved by using two resistors.

Then the next thing is that the input of the micro modular is AC coupled, meaning you can not get a gate pulse in ... you will get an up going trigger on the rising gate edge and a down going trigger on the the other edge of the gate.

When a trigger is all you want, depending on if there is an additional inversion on the micro's input, you may have to invert the signal before using it - this can be done in the patch.

you can also reconstruct the gate signal by splitting the signal in a negative part and a positive part, then invert the negative path and the use the first pulse to set a flip-flop, and the second one to reset it. This can be done in the patch as well.

So .. you'd start by finding out the voltage levels for the rs-09 gate output.

When the rest seems like nuts-talk to you ... don't worry .. I can patch up some examples to get you through .. but first need to know the levels :-)

Hi sepiakeys,

Somewhere in the NM1 Archive you can find my Pearl patches.
Like the Pearl Drum synth.
Audio-in is triggering gates.

The Roland RS-09 gate voltage is the following: off: 0V / on: +14V

I also had a try with audio triggering the envelope: routing the audio signal into a pulse module and then into the gate of the envelope worked quite well, as long als the pulse was set to have a certain length.

14 Volt seems a bit much ... would reduce it by a factor of ten or so ... two resistors let's say 1k and 10k, like this:

Code:

Roland side  ->  NM side

        10k
  >---[____]---*------>
               |
              | |
              | | 1k
              | |
               |
               |
  >------------*------>
            ground

The audio in that you use now, you could also use an envelope follower to extract the volume from the incoming audio, then compare that to some level and start the envelope from that.
