Hey all

One of the things I'm most lacking in my studio are good dedicated compressor units.
The only thing I have is a "crappy" Yamaha GC2020IIB.

I am not yet that experienced with compression and am not sure I really got how important it can be by now, which also explains why I haven't got any proper compressor yet...

But was thinking now that I'm thinking of an heavy remodelling of my studio, it could be interesting to know what compressors are good for a more experimental kind of electronic music?
I think I'll try to sell some of the stuff I have and since in Portugal it hasn't been easy to sell equipment, maybe with trades it will be easier and I could get an interesting compressor.
The thing is... right now I have no idea which ones I should consider and which ones are good for electronic music...

Anyone with experience wants to share his/her insights? Smile

Thanks a lot,

Paulo

Compressors are personal preference like so may other things. If there are special compressors for electronic music, I am unaware of it.

There is one major thing to be aware of when it comes to compressors, and it is how "transparent" it sounds. Optical compressors are known to sound more transparent than vca-based ones, for example. In recent years, it has become more popular to hear the apparent "breathing" or gain change that heavy compression results in, especially in electronic dance music.

There are of course tons of compressor plugins, but if you want a hardware one, I personally prefer the RNC 1773 , for its price and sound. Its stereo only, you can't use it as a dual mono compressor, but it has a side chain input. It has been in production for over a decade at least.
