Varying Power Supply (vcos) question - "Solar box" |
|
|
I found a Solar Battery Charger Panel the other day at a charity shop and now I'm thinking of building a solar powered sound generator.
The Panel can be switched between 3/6/9/12V which always set the maximum (minimum dependent on light). Current ranges from 200A at 3v to 50mA at 9 & 12v.
After I first tried it on the cv intput of a 555 to not too interesting results. So, the idea being that the solar panel should not only serve as power supply, but also as (part of, at least,) the "control interface" I came to think of a few circuits I saw here that use the power supply of 40106 chips to build a vco...
I tried a 40106 based circuit (2 oscs w/diode heterodyne mixing) powered from the panel and it sounded quite interesting, but I'm wondering of "how I can get the most" out of it. I'm especially interested in "instability". for example use the remaining gates as "no-output" oscillators (at, say, different fixed frequencies) like I've seen on, I think, the cacophonator, to make the chip unstable/generate crosstalk... will have to try a reservoir cap from V+ to ground, but suspecting that for what I want it's better to omit it.
anyway - was wondering if someone here has some more ideas worthy trying out (I got quite a few different chips around - 4093, 4069, 4040, 4046 to name just a few more common ones...)
thanks for suggestions!
Will keep you posted on the process of future experiments.

maybe 2 gated LFOs in a row from the 4093 with a ultrabrigt LED that shines on the Solar panel will make the powersupply extra instabil .... (but watch out it can be a perpetuum mobile ) |

thanks dubmaze! yeah, wanna be careful with those perpetuum mobile (;
well, I did some further experimenting here. tried both the described 40106 oscs as well as a 4093. (one where I used two nandgates for oscs and then the same diode mixing as above, one where I "mixed" the outputs through a third 4093 gate...
interestingly the 4093 tends to go higher in frequency when the voltage goes down...
reservoir capacitors can actually be fun... I tried both a 4,7µf and a 100µf on both circuits... I think the effect can best be seen in the short vid of the 40106 version (the one I'll gonna be focussing on right now, I think)..
but anyway, also recorded a short demo of the 4093 version (diode/3rdgate mix)
overall I don't seem to get much in frequency modulation between "start of oscillation" and "full voltage"... next I've already started on trying the whole thing with two LDRs rather than pots...

mp3s and pictures coming in a minute... bad interwebs connex makes upload a bit pita-esque! _________________ ~~~

as promised - recordings of a) the 40106 osc (same circuit as in video), b) the 4093 also with diode mixing and the 4093 with "3rdgate mixing"...
as well as a few more pics, especially of the 4093 circuit...
