mLAN audio and midi interface from Yamaha |
 |
|
mLAN at last..
The i88X is an mLAN-based Audio and MIDI interface which features two mic and six line inputs that deliver audio to the unit's 24-bit96kHz A/D converters. Built-in ADAT Light Pipe compatibility and SPDIF I/O allows for 18 simultaneous inputs and outputs. The i88X can be used as a stand-alone 18-channel computer I/O, or as an expansion device in an mLAN network. Because the i88X is mLAN compatible, users get the added benefits of integration with over 40 mLAN licensee company products.
mLAN is Yamaha´s name for its embedding protocol for audio and midi over firewire. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Are you sure that mLan stuff is compatible with equipment made by manufacturers other than Yamaha _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

Well.. in order to use the mLAN features on a device to device basis, you would need mLAN gear. On the other hand, just install the software drivers on your mac or PC and then you are ready to B & B. This is really just a firewire device.. it is the embedding protocol that is a bit "special" and what yamaha calls mLAN. well.. mLAN depends on a lot of features in the firwire protocol too. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Right. As I understand it, Firewire is just a serial I/O connection, like USB, or RS232. There is no standard way to send audio or MIDI over the interface. So, you need a driver for every device you have. You can't just hook up a MOTU and a KYMA on a Firewire interface and expect them to talk to each other. If they were MLAN devices, they could.
If the MLAN technology takes off, it could be very useful. |

That is correct, Howard. So mLAN is a good thing. You can check out the mLAN faq at the tech pages over at Yamaha. Their implementation seems very solid. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"
