Hi
Can someone explain, why there is 10 step sequencers, or 7 step seq. (Like serge)
Are those can be driven as 4/4 for mfos excluding 2 last steps and last 3 steps for serge?
Or they is ment for polyrythms?
Can 10step seq be builded as 8step?

Most 10 step sequencers use the 4017 counter, which can be set to between 1 and 10 steps.

In addition to AlanP's succinct answer, yes, you just have to take the step 9 output and tie it to the reset pin of the 4017. Commonly these are built with a rotary switch that lets you determine which step resets the sequencer and thereby controls the number of steps.

as for why does it exist. You can create different time signatures and using multiple sequencers with a different number of steps can create
more variation and interesting patterns. And although sequencers are often used to control the pitch of a VCO you can of course use it to
control anything that accepts a control voltage. For example an 8 step sequencer controlling the pitch of a VCO with a 5 step sequencer
controling a VCA can create changing accents on notes.
