G2 for Pad sounds?

Is the G2/G2 Engine suitable for creating atmospheric sounds?

I mean "atmospheric" here like the Best Service's XXL Pads, XXL Pads2 sounds in categories like ATMO PADS, AMBI PADS. These are really warm, complex , I guess mulitlayered pad-like sounds.

I used to have the Nord Modular Rack, and however it was capable of creating similar sounds, I would not call its sound "warm".

Well I'm a newbie with the G2 but I have been unlucky at creating soft pads, probably my fault. I'm used to some Yamaha AN1X pads and I haven't been able to reproduce them in my G2, the saws sounds more raspy and aggressive.

The G2 "tone" is bright, tight and crisp, ideal for drums, bass, misc noises. Harder to do pads.

I usually just chorus and phaser the waves prior to the filter for a smoother tone (and after). It is hard to make pads like on a PPG / Microwave XT since the filters are so different. Also, applying Rob's tilt filter can add a smoothing effect.

This is what I was afraid of.... Without deep programming knowledge the G2 is not really good in this league. A Virus may rock there...

Sorry dasz, I do not have currently a G2 to listen to that patch. Any mp3 example?

Does anyone know, what instruments do sample developers use for these great atmospheric sounds? I guess post-processing is heavily used on all samples.

You should try the G2 demo that Clavia offers for free. Runs on a PC, and is monophonic, but gives you an idea of what's possible, I'd say *most* of the patches can be played on the demo (there are a few modules that don't work on it).

don't get me wrong, the g2 is great at pads (I've created some 20+ saw osc pads which are T_H_I_C_K), only the kind of pads I'm into (ppg/waldorf xt), take some effort to build -- the ones which will jump out of the mix wrt other G2 sounds. IMO only, not in general!

Once you use a lot of overlapping LFO's and the G2's effects modules, you can do some pretty amazing atmosperic stuff, not to mention being able to trigger external samplers with G2 sequencers connected to midi out modules. It is a sound to behold (sorry I cannot share such examples at the moment).

Please try the demo like jksuperstar suggested, don't give up on the G2.

I'll chech that patch in the G2 demo software.
It is nice to see that the G2 community stays helpful! What a good news.. G1 to G2 converter. Does it exactly translates e.g. the DX7 patches of the G1?

Maybe you should rather get one of the other NordLeads 2 or 3. Those can create by instant really really nice ambi pads.

For NL3 pads, check out my podcast and especially the song bits: "Toempadangel" and "Toempadheaven".

if you like the pads in the leads, you will like the pads in the g2 -- you can easily make a fairly good nord lead model in a g2. The synths are quite simmilar in sound (from what I heard from a friend who owns both a g2 and a lead 2x & lead 3).

I've noticed a few things about (my) G2 pads... while it is relatively easy to create lush pad sounds on the G2 (Chorus module works a treat for them), I find it very difficult to produce bright (but not digital bright), powerful, 'in your face' pads for up tempo dance music. The other thing is that, you often need a lot of polyphony to make them sound good and then there isn't much left for other sounds.

Having said that, I would say overall, that the G2 can produce lovely sounding pads.

I would say that with time n tweaking u can get dome great pad sounds, custom filters and several oscs are a good place to start.
