I need a good recommendation for a book on EQ and compression. I just spent some time on Amazon and found that most books are either for the beginner, i.e, how to record into your computer or far too complex.

Is there any book that explains EQ and compression without all the excess noise?

I am using Digital Performer for the mixdown.

Thanks,
Eleni

The sound on sound articles have helped me a lot, they are pretty straightforward and cover a wide range of topics!
The great thing about sound on sound, as a digital performer user, is that they have a section each month dedicated to digital performer!

The archive is huge and you'll have to look for topics yourself:

The editor of sound on sound, Paul White, also wrote a number of books from microphone techniques, mixing to midi.

enjoy!

ps. Studying the DP manual helped me discover some very powerfull abilities of the program.

This is good advice.

You can just as well read some of the articles( at the SOS site ) about how some classic albums were recorded and produced. Some of this info matched with the more factual how to stuff might be very enlightening indeed.

Yup, you sure have. Not very subtle though. Cosmetic surgery eh? Laughing

Please remove that one from your sig ASAP. One more post with that link or similar shit in it and you are out of here.

Besides the cosmetic surgery spamaradam, the book recommendation is totally out there... I own the Bob Katz book and read a lot of parts of it, it is very high end stuff, impossible to grasp and put to use in most homestudio environments.

It is a very nice book and really informative, but when somebody adds:

Quote:

to their question, to point they need a clear and simple read on audio engineering/mixing topics, it is very weird to recommened Katz!

Sorry for the rant (spam Wink ), but I had a long day and posts like this get me sharp and running again!

Hello,
I am relatively new to more in depth mixing and EQing, but I recently purchased a book called Mastering Audio by Bob Katz. I haven't read the whole thing, but what I have is very good. This book gives perspectives for both the sincere engineer, but also has a lot of information for beginners. And while I haven't applied all the principles present in the book, it looks like a good read in addition to a helpful reference for your mixing.

I own Bobby Owinski's "The Mixing Engineer's Handbook." It's pretty informative for someone just starting out, especially because mixing in digital is different than analog. HOWEVER, only half the book is usable, because the other half is the interviews he conducted to get the info used in the first part. You may want to check the library for this or skim through it in a bookstore first.
