Matrix performance |
|
|
As posted on the NOrd Modular mailinglist:
One hell of a job! But I got it working. Just to show why I would want a
'matrix module'.
The idea was to create a modulation matrix which is controlled through
the knob panel, i.e. patching without the editor.
The synth itself is pretty basic. 2 VCO, noise, 3 LFO 3 ENV and 1
filter, but they are basically freely patchable. A bit of 'dirt' is
thrown in on the OSC's and the filter to create analog feel.As a
gigantous number of knobs are required this turned into a 'performance'
. The synth parameters are on the patch pages and the matrix control is
on the global pages.Variations 1-4 are done with some clowning around,
basically to show that some noodling is possible as well as a passable
lead, all in 1 patch.
2 of the MOD SOURCE and 3 of the MOD DEST routings are freely
assignable, the rest is hardwired to the most common routings.
One final warning. Don't switch on the cables, I get scared shitless
myself when I do that.
Description: |
Basic 2 VCO/3 LFO/3 ENV synth patch in slot A with a modulation matrix mapped to global pages.
Basic idea from EMS synthi A, but with added patch level. |

OK, I fixed that little problem. You have the honor of the first G2 performance posting. Congratulations....
Would you mind terribly editing your post and reuploading the performance as a prf2 file? It will help when the archive lister is updated to show peformances.
Also, the description (file commend) should describe the peformance a little. That's what shows up in the patch archive list. Thanks.... |

Now, back to the important stuff. The patch!
Would you explain how this works as a performance. When I load it, only Slot A is active. Should I manually activate the other slots? Are different patches in the other slots? I guess I don't understand performances very well. |

The only reason it's a performance is that the global page assignments are not saved when it's a patch, so apart from the extension I probably don't deserve the credit. Although there is room for loading the other slots this will mean that you wouldn't want to assign global page settings to these patches, as that would destroy the matrix assignments. For instance loading another MATRIX patch into the other slots would probably work, but only 1 of them could be 'patched' using the global pages.
Anyway, the 'normal' synth parameters are all under the slot A parameter pages where you'd expect them, apart from page 3 of the effect section, which allows for selection of de source & destination routings of the MODs and the DESTINATIONs. The most obvious start would be to switch on ENV1 on page D1 to route a ADSR envelope to the VCA.
When you switch to the Global pages the whole matrix is mapped to the 15 8-faders. The idea being that a mod source can be routed with a certain level to any of the 15 destinations using only the G2 itself.
After playing around with it a bit I realized that the inverse modulations are probably not as useful in the place where they are now, and it's also not possible to modulate a MOD source level itself (a MOD depth envelope over an LFO for instance). I'll probably fix that one as that's the natural routing for the wheel.
The reason for creating this cable monster is to demonstrate that a patch matrix module would be very nice in a future release, as the routing itself doesn't take that much patch load/memory, but the editor screen starts to look like a plate of spaghetti when you want to do this.
And it would allow me to take the G2 with me without a PC and still allow me to actually 'patch' using only the keys version itself.
Thanks for watching

Thanks for the explaination. Making it a performance give you twice the pages of controls. Clever.
I've learned a lot by this patch. |
