E&MM Syntom II Drummodule Subject description: how does it sound? |
|
|
hi all,
my 2nd modular cabinet is nearly full so i have to start to plan my next larger project.
i want to built myself a midicontrolable analogue drum machine and wonder what sound modules to go for. looking at the schematics i'd preferred the E&MM syntom II...
i know how the ds7/8 sound, so does anybody have soundsamples of the following modules to share?
Ken Stones drum/chime/bell simulators
Thomas Henry's Clangora
E&MM Syntom II/Synbal
Boss Percussion Synthesizer
ELRAD Drum Synthesiser _________________

good idea! My analog drums are buried in the middle of my ~1 meter tall rack and I've often thought about breaking them out into their own rack. Anyway, I've been using Tom Henry's Midi to Trigger to fire the drums. All my stuff is 1u panels. For sounds I've been using the Craig Anderton Hip Bass Drum, Tom Henry's Snare + and John Blacet's Percussive Noise Voices, although the Noise Voices have been retired to use the SN76477's for my new SN-Voices. So those will be doing double duty now as synth and drum voices.
I'll swear by either the Hip Bass Drum and Snare+: I think they're great. These were published in Polyphony magazine ~1979-1980 era. Polyphony was published by PAIA then became Electronic Musician. The Snare+ does use a SN76477, though. Tom has redesigned it since with a Midwest Analog Products version, which I haven't heard, but guess is fairly close to the original. I haven't really compared my Hip Bass Drum to the MAP version either. I would say it is not really good for the booming bass drums which are so prevalent in today's dance music.....it's more like a well-miked, compressed, recorded acoustic rock and roll bass ....very "realistic." |

OT: Personally I prefer messsing with percussive / rythmic events that are complementing the overall tonality of a piece rather than having a drummer banging away on any sort of drums. Still nothing beats a real drummer when you need one. My point is that I have been missing a controllable and patchable synth that does percussive synth stuff and not "real" sounds. Of course, using any sort of modular synth or semi-modular ( software or hardware ) solves this problem. It would be nice to see a monster percussion synth though. I would also love to see gates, compressors, sidechaining and more.

Forgive me, but I couldn't hear any drums on that. It sounds like clinks and clanks and pips and pops - or am I missing something here. I thought the idea of a drum module was to imitate real drums, which I have never really found to be very successful. It's a clever recording of course. I have used a Roland R5 since 1990 or so which probably has sampled real drum sounds and it very realistic |

thank you very much for all your comments and the nice samples indeed.
and to be clear, i am looking for clangs and blips and zaps and maybe a deep bassdrum.
i'd never tried to imitate a real drummer. making electronic music works different for me. i ever wanted the listener to recognize that it's electronic... in case i need real drums i have to ask a friend who is drummer:

Well a lot of analog drums don't really sound like real acoustic drums, but I love the analog drum sound because it can sound really cheesy and I like cheesy.

Is there a circuit floating around anywhere for this Craig Anderton Hip Bass Drum beast? It sounds like something I've been looking for.

Hi, Could you expand on this comment? What sort of CV mods? Do you have circuit schematics? A GOOD synth Bass drum is pretty desirable.

Hip Bass Drum as an FX unit Subject description: lateral thinking |

The Hip Bass Drum is a tunable damped sinewave oscillator followed by a limiter/clipping circuit. Seems to me that if you back off the feedback on the oscillator, it would be a filter - so you could inject an audio signal. Might make some nice sounds... |

sorry nothing on paper, but a simple mod
look at R13 (12K), (the end connected to +V power supply) i connected to a jack. 12V went to the jack's switch, otherwise I put in a CV signal to control the thud.
works very well. |
