So happy to have found this forum! |

My name is Heather Dea Jennings, I am a composer, performer (flute, voice, EWI), professor, not necessarily in that order
My interests are just about any kind of music-electronic, western european classical, north indian hindustani, gamelan, jazz, ambient, etc. I have gigged A LOT with many different kinds of music from "alternative pop" to gamelan, to experimental opera, tonal classical music, atonal classical music, etc., and I love to perform and record. In fact, if any of you are looking for a singer, flute player, I am interested in doing online collaborations.
I have been in hiatus in the electronic composition world due to moving to a foreign country, having two kids and working full time, but now things are coming to fruition. The time wasn't wasted, as I thought of many projects, but just haven't written them down yet. I don't have a website right now, but after May, I plan on getting one up and going.
The city where I live has very little to offer, but thanks to the internet I don't feel too left out.
One problem I find is that I am used to composing in a Macintosh environment, but I had to give it up due to lack of service in Brazil (as well as lack of funds to pay the extra big price to have a mac here), but I just never had the heart to really switch to windows and use it for hardcore composition, not even in Csound, which I was using for awhile. I am not a big fan of windows, to say the least. My husband is a physicist, and knows linux inside and out. Are any of you using linux to compose? How about windows? How about max os x? I am thinking of buying a new computer soon (if I get a job I am applying for in May), and your opinions, as electronic music creators and listeners will have great sway. So far I am thinking of just jumping in and joining linux, and I am a proponent of free software and free music.
Meanwhile, I play flute in our local orchestra (the only one in the whole state!), totally tonal, non electronic music, and even liking it!!
I look forward to getting to know you! Please forgive any typos, it's past my bedtime and the spell checker is too slow with my 56k modem
All the best, Heather |

Welcome, Heather. You have come to the right place.
There are lots of Mac fans here, and many people who use windows. I think you can work in either environment. If you already love the Mac, you probably will never get over it. Your hubby will probaby grow to like OSX because it's built on top of BSD Unix.
There is a lot of work being done on Linux as an audio workstation, but it is still in my opinion for those who like living on the edge. Since your hubby is a Linux devote, then maybe you are in a good position to jump in with Linux.
I am maybe an expert on Linux since I run this web site on RH 9, but I do my music on windows XP. (I say this with some embarassment).
I think I know your dad. Are you Don's daughter? If so, double welcome.
Anyhow, if you're feeling isolated and out of touch being in Brasil, then you will find lots of great people here from all over the world. This is a diverse group. |

Thanks Howard and Carlo for the warm welcome...
Howard, yes I'm Don's daughter. I sent you an email which you've probably already received! I do indeed feel isolated and out of touch, so thanks! I'll be hanging out here a lot.
Carlo, I am a Berklee grad (from the synth department, where I also worked for two years)! Is that also your connection to Berklee? Small world, huh? Oh, and your son is beatiful!
As for the computer systems, although I have started working on the research, I will only have time to study my options after May, but I will keep you two in mind!
Thanks again,
Ciao!

Thanks, Iarik is beautiful indeed
gee...I am a Berklee graduate too. I graduated from the Synthesis Department in 1989 and then I worked 1 year as Lab Monitor in the same department. I do not remember any Brazilian girl attending MS. When were you there _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

Welcome Heather!
Yeah.. I agree with Howard. OS X might be a great choice. OS X is a lot easier to maintain than Linux and the general support fom Apple is quite good. A lot of pretty geeky audio software is being released for OS X, and a lot of it is free. OS X has a pretty smart audio and midi architecture that makes it easier for software vendors to create decent drivers and audio plugins. All in all, OS X is a good bet. ..And it still looks like a mac.. sort of.

I forgot to mention that I'm an American, sorry! We must have bumped into eachother, I started my studies in 1987, and started in the MS dept. in 1989 or so, but I may have only started to use the labs just after. I graduated in 1992 (under Richard Boulanger's toutelage) and worked also as a lab monitor until 1994. Anyways, I worked with Alex (who has his own studio on newbury street), Kai (who's now an instructor), and another guy, (I think his name was Daw) who moved to NYC, and I don't know if Hiro was there at the same time as you, but he's also in NYC now. The rest of us were after you, like Elaine, Curt, Scott, and now I don't know who is there. I do know that Kurt Biederwolf is the head of the department now, and doing a great job. BTW, there was a Brazilian girl, Beatriz, who started in the dept. the same time as I did, but I think you had already left.
Now the city where I live in Brazil is very beautiful, but there is very little culture, and no electronic music community, how strange!! |

the lab monitors when I was there were Andrew Sherman, Alex Frowein, Kai Turnbull, Dow Brain, Hirofumi (Hiro) Iida (I am not sure about his last name) and me.
David Mash was the head of the department....a long time ago _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

Hey, there! You found me! LOL! The fancy thing for me to do would be to find a map of Florence, but I'm out of time for now...
Take care,
Heather |
