I was wondering what someone would have to go through to create their own fully functional softsynth... I don't want anything too fancy...

Just a simple PD/FM 2 Op synth with several wave-forms, 2 Envelops, maybe a filter with envelop and MIDI control...

Am I asking a lot?? I was just wondering how hard this would be to make and what tools I'd need to make it... Unless someone has some pre-existing software suggestions...

I don't really have much in the way of programming experience.. Ultra-base-bones Max/MSP use... lots of stuff on the Nord Modulars.. but thats about it...

Also, would it be too difficult to take pre-existing stuff from Max/MSP and use it in a VST/AU host?? Again, I have very little experience, so if this IS possible and someone would direct me to the info or walk me through it, I'd REALLY appreciate it...

You could have a play with Sonicbirth. It only costs $50 and you can build your own AU's with it.

Failing that give Plogue Bidule a try too. It works both with PC and Mac and has one of the easiest interfaces to build your softsynths with.

Synthedit is great for making VSTi. I made some great synths. If you do them correctly, they're very stable. I built a rather enormous synth that, while it's a bit of a processor hog, has never crashed my machine once. Simple synths don't add much of anything to the processor load.
