Hi everyone,

I've recently added a moog etherwave theremin (sd) to my live setup, which is in turn fed into a korg kaos pad (for real-time modulation of delay and reverb).

I'd like to modulate the signal with harmonic overtones (randomly fluctuating resonances, multiple pitches etc), similar to Mongolian throat singing. Is there some piece of hardware kit that I can add into my signal chain to achieve this?

Thanks

If you route it through a PC you can set it up in fruity loops with some formula controllers... if you want to use a PC that is...

I think a Nord Micro Modular (no longer in production so find a used one) or G2 engine would do nicely.

The theremin's wave is close to sine so needs some basic shaping to provide harmonics for the vowel filters to work with.

The nord could full wave rectify the sine to produce a glottal type waveform for it's voice filter. It also has a vocoder.

Any chance of you patching one of these up on the G2? Would really like to hear some Mongolian throat singing coming out of my little red brick.

Cheers

R.

Hi, thanks for the replies!

The G2 sounds like just the thing I'm looking for. Is it easy to program? I was searching for some kind of description for glottal waveforms, and got the impression that complicated algorithms are needed to create them. This really seems a bit beyond my knowledge of sound synthesis. Are their any premade patches available for the G2 that have been made specifically for this effect, or could anyone kindly create a patch as an example/experiment?

Much thanks

The Clavia G2 is basically a digital version of something like this:

It does come with a few presets but probably nothing which would be useful for your mongolian singers out of the box.

You will need a PC in order to run the G2 editor application.

You use that application to build patches. Patches can then be saved in the G2 and accessed from the front panel.

You will have to build your patches yourself. I wouldn´t say it is difficult, but you will have to invest a lot of time into this. Thing is, with a G2 you will be able to learn both basic and advanced synthesis and this is a good thing. Very Happy

So would I, but I don't know quite what it should sound like - maybe like attached?

This will run in the Clavia Demo software.

Well that's exactly how I imagined it would sound like. Very Happy

In addition to distorting the theremin wave to add harmonics, you could also experiment with the pitch tracker and envelope follower.

This was the key Laughing

I ended up with half wave rectification and a bit of FM-ery.

I saw this documentary a few months ago- because I had no idea what Tuvan throat singing sound like, or where it came from.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0187859/

The documentary isn't very exciting, but is quite informative.
