Console Visualisations |
|
|
I had a chance to see the PS3 music visualization today.
I was disappointed with NEON for xbox360. It is nice and a step up from most PC software, but not the giant leap forward I had expected. Not sure how to adapt the controller based manipulation to MIDI as well.
The PS3 on the other hand, makes 15 year old PC stuff look sophisticated.
Has anyone seen other consoles with good music vis software? |

none, but i heard that the gp32x has some.
its got quite a big homebrew scene, so it wouldnt suprise me.
although its hand-held and propably doesnt count here?
if not, then no. was a team hacking the unreal engine at one point (xbox?, cant remember which console heh), but that was supposed to be a tool to make music with, that also reacted visually to what sounds were created.
well, not technically. you bent, skewed, distorted and replace the 3d objects, and all the objects had a sound attached to them, which also got modified upon 3d model modification.
was pretty neat actually _________________ http://www.last.fm/music/good+behaviour+sex+reward |

gp2x runs linux and can do some decent, albeit visually truncated things. The video palette is a bit stunted, but the breakout box does interface with decent video sources. I have one, and I do mess around with it a lot, although I never thought to use it for what you're suggesting. It probably wouldn't be a big deal to port any linux application to it, there's a great sdk. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.
EGM: What does retro mean to you?
Parker: Like, old and outdated.

you got one? i envy you.
i was pretty close to get one, but i lost the bid 2 minutes within closing time. zzzz..
yeah, gp32x is linux and as you say, it shouldnt be too hard to port just about anything (within hardware limitations ofcourse) to it. that was one of the reasons i wanted one in the first place, since its linux based
not sure about the graphic hardware that it ships with, but seeing how they choose *nix for their OS of choice, they propably made the whole handheld ready for modifications and "improvements".
hell, the psp has been hacked to pieces and thats not even supposed to be able to get hacked, and here we have a handheld basing their OS on opensource?
hell yes! _________________ http://www.last.fm/music/good+behaviour+sex+reward |

There is a PC version of NEON coming out soon, MIDI interfaceing should be easier with this version.

I can't check the link right now (damn workplace filter), but I see llamasoft in the url. If it has been touched by Jeff Minter in any way I must definitely check it out. For references on Jeff Minter and this sort of thing, look up Psychedelia on the C64 and Colourspace on the Atari ST.
Minter may not always have created perfect things, but he has great experience in being a unique entity compared to his surroundings.

Jeffs an old friend so I have been playing with his lightsynth stuff for years, I have fond memorys of one night projecting one of his vlm-0 machines onto low cloud with this really powerful projector that was used for some Orb gigs at the time. It was great laying on the ground looking up at this huge display, music blaring while having a few smokes.
I haven't spoken with him for a while so I may ring him and get hold of the pc version of NEON.
Cheers

Wow! Cool! I'm mostly a fan of his epilepsy-inducing C64 games, and Tempest 2000 on the PC - a unique approach to graphics that should be imitated more.

He also did the Virtual Light Machine on the Atari Jaguar CD. Unfortunately, Neon PC has never seen a release.. and for no really good reason...
It is kind of obtuse but quite capable. The Neon engine has been repurposed for Space Giraffe and Gridrunner Revolutions, and rewritten since then. Llamasoft currently seems to be enamored with iOS devices. |
