I needed a realistic sounding acoustic string patch for a gig lately. Since I was too lazy to borrow and take along a sampling-based synth (I don't own one myself) solely for this purpose, I attempted to synthesize it.

The patch uses only "classic analog" synthesis components. In fact, it is a portation a of a patch I originally created for the Alesis Andromeda (on which it -perhaps unsurprisingly- sounds even better).

At the core is the keyboard-tracking "body" oscillator, which is a plain sawtooth osc. This drives the non-tracking "formant" pulse oscillator with a combination of hard-sync and exponential FM, which in this way produces fixed formants sounding very close to bowed strings. Adding PWM further animates the sound. Mix the two oscs, run them through a plain 12dB lowpass filter modulated by a "bowing" decay envelope -presto!

It's just an one trick pony, but it's an useful trick. Smile Got the job done well at the gig. Two variations populated. Variation 1 responds very expressively to keyboard velocity (it's rather boring otherwise). DSP usage is below 16.6% both for memory and cycles, giving enough polyphony.

Hi Tim!

I was in a similar situation. I need string and brass section sounds for the band that I'm in. For strings I modified one of the preset patches - Avantitron, and for brass I used this:

For what kind of music did you need those sounds? Do you have any other acoustic strings or brass patches fo G2?
