It takes audio file data input and creates a digital abstraction of the data that separates out time, pitch, and timbre. To create the vocal for the Lear piece I sang (and I flat out can't sing) a different version of the song. Then did a number on it with autoTune* then loaded it into the variOS which allowed me to play the song on the keyboard using "new" notes while preserving some (analog) of the timber and expression of the original.
Edit
*pre-processing with autoTune is optional depending on your intended use and intonation. _________________ The question is not whether they can talk or reason, but whether they can suffer. -- Jeremy Bentham |

Well, I did say it creates an "analog" of the original time/pitch/timbre data. Faithfulness to original timbre is not its strong suit. But it is a lot of fun and a great toy. Though a rather specialized one. And as to wether or not it earns its keep in the studio...that's open to debate.
It is used with computer software interface that includes facilities to use the variOS as a dedicated groove/loop composition tool.
It also comes with some fairly crude virtual synths. _________________ The question is not whether they can talk or reason, but whether they can suffer. -- Jeremy Bentham |

Very beautiful. I've heard this before, but it's a great sound. Too bad it is so short. I'm ready for an opera, Robert. |

Salud!
Elektro80, if you like the Variphrase concept of the VariOS, check Roland V-Synth. It's a monster, despite its shortcomings. |
