Hello everybody Smile

I have updated the Quantix 8 page , project is now ready to go !

The schematic, BOM, pcb implant are online and ... the freeware Wavetable MIDI Editor software for PC is now released freeware here:

http://m.bareille.free.fr/modular1/quantix8/quantix8.htm

Diyers interested by one (or many) pcbs + PIC with firmware, please contact me.

I need to evaluate if there is enough interest from builders for this module and if yes the first pcb batch volume. Feel free to carry this new to other synth diy places...

Cheers,

Marc B.

Yes, very impressive. I am also interested in your EXTRAPOLE - Multimode for LP4P VCFs, as I have a MOTM-440 (converted to Frac rack and banana plugs). Would love to hear some samples from your DG version when you have a chance.

Yes, Please don't. A good heads up of developments like these are always appreciated. I only mentioned it because I hate chasing details through two parallel threads.

I am interested in a board and chip. My level of interest is dependent on cost.

i too am interested in a chip/pcb set. (depending on cost)

this looks like just the module i have been waiting for-mainly as there are no DIY quantizer boards out there

Hi Marc,
I would be interested in two or four, depending on price. Very interesting project which I've been following for a while.

I would be interested in the sampling options, could this work in a similar way to the Doepfer A112?I'm probably way out on this!

But the other features still attract me to the project.

Hello,

Thanks for all the replies Very Happy

I am not very used with PHP forums, and to avoid counting twice the same persons who post here and write me emails for pcb pre order estimation , i will count only emails. Just send me the quantity you will be interested by.

I am aware price is an important parameter for many of you, on the other side the only way top slowdow price seriously on gerber pcbs it is to order a large quantity ...and then there are customs in the middle too!!! I will do for the best ...

About the sample feature :
I do not know how the A112 sorry...

It is a bit tricky to play samples with the Quantix but it is possible to do. The idea it is to sync the increase the waveform counter each time the sample position pointer reach the end of the current sample ... This can be done many ways ( zero cross detector , gate inpu, wavecounter, ...)

Say it is then possible to play 32 samples of (64*256) bytes lengh ... One sample per bank ... Please be aware the actual firmware is not really optimised to be a sample player, this feature was not really planned at the origin of the Quantix8 design... It is just something the module can do if correctly driven.

Cheers,

Marc B.

I'd be interested in more than one- when the Mac editor is ready. I'm impressed by this module.

I'll be honest. I don't want a wavetable osc or a MIDI to CV converter. I just want 4 quantizers, so whether I order any will heavily depend on the price. Is the PIC required for the quantizer section?

Papareil,

welcome to electro-music.com!

That's a really cool module you have there.

To all interested parties:
I know there has already been some confusion over the placement of this thread and it's sibling in the main DIY forum. Should it perhaps be moved into DIY since I understand that some of the regulars there may miss this thread here, or would that only create further confusion?

Hi Marc:
I want one for sure (may be 2, depends on the price).
Thank you.

Hello,

Thanks for your welcome messages Very Happy

- i will transmit interest for the Mac OS version of the editor software to my friend who coding it ... I guess this will motivate/boost him a lot !

Yes the PIC is absolutly necessary. It is the Quantix8 brain !!!

If you do not want the extra features , may be i can make you a 'light' version of the Quantix8 , with just the Quantizer, but this wont change the price, probably increase it too, because of the time it will take Wink

Wavetable oscillator and Quantizer modes are the same thing. It just depend how you are using the Quantix8 :

- if you send a UpSaw at audio rate into the fast ADC Input , the Quantix work like a wavetable oscillator , and you get the current waveform in memory present at the output but played at the frequency of your UpSaw signal...

-Now unplug the Upsaw on the fast ADC input and replace it by a CV coming from a slow lfo, sequencer, midi keybord orany dc source and then the Quantix 8 is a CV- Quantizer! The memory should contain 'scales' ( +/- regular stair up ramps ) The software give you equivalences between notes and DAC digital values for each scales too ...

MCV mode is very different of the two previous ones : the PIC get full control of the RAM/DAC . The fast ADC is then unsused .It was just few lines of code to add to implement this feature. I couldnt resist to add it...

Same thing about a sample player feature. I think i have found the way to code the full ram parsing internaly ... So i guess the sample player mode will be much improved in comig days. Once again , it is just some tricky pieces of code but alway on the same hardware base Very Happy

I have builded the Quantix8 because i was in need of an editable CV Quantizer with CV selectable scales first, ad this far before wavetable and other special features . Now the design of a such module driven me to the actual Quantix8 shape , who is a true swiss-knife module for the same price ...no extra parts... Who will complain ??? Cool

Hope this will help a little bit ... sorry for long post ...

Marc B.

Marc,

I don't know about others, but I haven't sent you the email yet expressing interest in a board until I can get a rough idea from you what the cost might be. I don't want to trap you into any kind of commitment on price, but I cannot promise a purchase either without some kind of idea what the price range might be.

Danno,

I understand ... A rough estimation for the pcb + pic give the 50/60 euros range as the most probable BUT this is only a rough estimation.

Anyway i get lots of requests , much more than expected for a first batch ...This false all my estimation, but it is a very good news and it go in the right way for pcb production cost Smile

I will post infos here as soon as i will get them...

Thanks,

Marc B.

Hi Marc, how about some demos of the Quantix playing tempered scales?
That's how I would use it (in quantizer mode).

I would really love to see a quad version, and the inclusion of table-based cv quantization. You could use that to scale positive and negative ranges, create velocity response curves ala' the DX7 (and others), etc.

Hello,

Thanks for all the replies and very positives feedback about the Quantix-8 ! I have been a little bit flooded and it took me a while to answer to everybody Smile

Here are some projects news :

1)The Quantix-8 can now read 8 bits samples an easy way...It have 6 different memory sample maps. There are infos of 'how it work', two'hardcore' demos sound clips with the wavetable file to make them ... +/- at the end of the web page

2) the ZERO plug is now a Logic input to reset PIC internal counters. The zero crossing detector output is still available on the pcb and should be wired to the panel anyway ...

3)The Final pcb will be v1.1 . It include a couple of extra resitors, and a little connector for the input bias switch. Silkprint modified to keep parts number still visible after assembly. I am still waiting to collect pcb fabs infos ... Here i am not really flooded Confused

4)I have updated/completed the web page with many picture and infos. I hope explanations are quite clear...

5)As a friend told me quite recently: 'it is a true Pandora box!' To add cool features to this board will never end ... But be aware that for the moment i am just trying to close the box again !

Please feel free to check my magic box at http://m.bareille.free.fr/modular1/quantix8/quantix8.htm

Thanks again to all project supporters Smile

Cheers,

Marc B.
