Soft Sync |
|
|
Unlike hard sync, which forces the slaved oscillator to zero, soft sync reverses the slave oscillator slope. This has a similar but subtler effect.
I thought I had tried soft sync on a Roland 100M years (decades) ago and not liked it. Recently, I discovered that the 100M had another variety of sync called "weak sync". I could be wrong but I believe this was where the master oscillator's sync pulses would only reset the slave if it occurred close to the slaves own sync pulse. This partially unlocked the two frequencies. I may do more research into this later. It sounded like crap from memory but maybe deserves a second listen.
I like the soft sync effect, it seems to have both organic and electronic qualities.
I have here two patches, the first uses LFO SHPA abused into the audio range. The direction control when fed with a bipolar rectangle duplicates the soft sync effect almost exactly (two reverses per master cycle instead of one). In this patch, the shape of the master and slave is also modulated to give some nice evolving tones. The effect section involves an old trick (from the early multi-effect period) of putting a pitch shifter and filter in the feedback path of a longish delay.
The second patch uses info from Dave and Rob (search this site using soft AND sync). It uses zero Hz FM to fake soft sync, the effect is the same but the sweep is controlled by the modulation index (amount) and not the difference in frequency as in the real thing. Again, shape modulation broadens the tonal possibilities. Unlike the first patch, this one can play high notes without massive amounts of aliasing. Variation one uses the mod wheel to sweep the sync.

Wow, these are very nice, especially, IMHO, the FM sync. It's a real growler... |
