8-bit diy VCO or filter thing? Subject description: nintendo vco heaven? |
 |
|
So i spent most of the day playing with some fun 8 bit nintendo sound chip emulating vst plug ins and was thinking is there a DIY project out there that can emulate the old skool sounds of 8bit nintendo wave forms?
I know of the bug crusher sample and hold bit reduction circuit, i attempted t build it once but had no luck with it, dont know why (most of the circuist i build up from scratch seem to not work )
If a vco was fed into into the bug crusher i still dont think it could give me that awesome sound.
Hmmm, something to ponder indeed...
This is crazy but what if there was a way to use the nintendo sound chip or similar component and impliment it into a vco set up. That would be awesome.
Maybe im a dreamer, but im not the only one |

| dude woah, nice stuff, thats pretty much exactly what i was thinking about. I sure hope this guy goes through with the kits, from what i read some of the parts might be impossible to find if you miss out on a kit. some ones gotta keep me informed when i can get myself a kit |

yeah more people have built MIDI type interfaces for those 8-bit circuits than CV interfaces
if you want to go that route (or even if you dont) also check out...

hes got tons of posts about interfacing gameboys, segas, C64s, etc with MIDI, arduino, max/msp, and ableton live |

I'm the guy working on the Atari and Nintendo synth modules
The only rare components in the Atari kit are the microcontroller and a POKEY chip. The microcontroller isn't really rare, but getting one with my POKEY control code is. Everything else has come from Mouser or Digikey.
I am down to the last major design problem with the Pokey synth, and that is eliminating as much noise as possible without sacrificing any audio. It is taking longer than I expected, so I can't really give a time frame on when it will be finished. On the upside I am learning solutions to many problems that will also show up in the NES module design, so that module should only take half the development time. It's also given me breathing room to make simplifications, such as a $3 part I was able to eliminate in the design this week. _________________ Software and Hardware Design |

| well, I am looking very very forward to your progress. I will be sure to snatch up a kit asap, assuming you go into production. I'd love to see some progress on your 8bit thing when you finally get a chance too. maybe i could help you out in some way as a prototype beta tester or what not. Seriously best of luck to you, the world needs this! |
