A very special edition this time, with extra attention for sound artists working with field recordings,
the sounds of the environment. A carefully selected film and video program will be dealing with different
notions of ‘landscape’, and the film maker’s wish to capture the beauty of nature and life with a camera.
PROGRAM WEDNESDAY, 13 OCTOBER
MUSIC PROGRAM
Andra McCartney lives in Montreal where she teaches 'Sound in Media' for the Communication Studies department of the Concordia University, and is specialized in 'Soundwalks'. What interests her is the sensation of sounds of the environment you happen to be in: walking along a river, in a city, wherever. She focused her PhD dissertation on Vancouver soundscape composer Hildegard Westerkamp. For her Master's thesis, she interviewed fourteen Canadian women composers of electroacoustic music, and wrote about their experiences, ideas, music, and approaches to teaching and composition. Check out her online articles, and abstracts of published printed papers on www.andrasound.org.
On Wednesday evening Andra will give a presentation about 'Journées Sonores, canal de Lachine' - a soundwalk project by McCartney, including recordings made around the Lachine canal near Montreal, Quebec by several sound artists (Anna Friz, Owen Chapman, Lisa Gasior, David Paquette, Peter van Wyck, Sandra Gabriele) over a four year period. Andra will introduce the project using a flash installation, and will discuss plans for Thursday’s soundwalk workshop at Arminius, Rotterdam.
Composer and performer Olivia Block from Chicago combines field recordings, electronics and acoustic material. She has performed in the US, Europe and Japan, in projects together with other sound artists, as well as solo. So far she has released two solo CDs on the Sedimental label. Field recordings form the basis of her work, a framework on which she pins surprising instrumental structures. What fascinates her is how organic or ‘real’ sounds and electronic sounds relate to each other. In her view electronic technology imitates natural evolution, which she demonstrates by using similar sounds from both the ‘natural’ and the ‘artificial’ world.
For Xperiment>L she will present ‘Heaving To’, a quadrophonic composition, with live musicians accompanying and contrasting the amplified sounds, together creating a dense, swirling mass of sounds & textures appearing and retreating quickly throughout the space.
Alison Isadora, a New-Zealand-born multimedia artist, composer and violinist living in Amsterdam, will give us a preview of a new project she is working on. With her violin she controls a live sampling program called LiSa, creating a kind of soundtracks that need no images, a ‘theatre for the ear’. In this theatre the violin plays an unconventional part – don’t expect too many violin sounds!
