Well, when there is a human voice, that generally seems to draw my attention the most, unless it is an a language I don't understand. Well the language doesn't matter if the vocal sounds are so evocative that they are compelling in themselves, like in Luciano Berio's Paroles.

I have noticed that very often I don't pay any attention to lyrics even if they are sung in a language I understand. I'm lyricsless Shocked

Seraph, I used to be also pretty lyricless but lately I'm getting to know the powers of them and it's amazing what some lyrics can do for us once in a while I just think besides working pads, curtain instruments and serveral other sounding things that I still need to master, vocals are one of the hardest.

My favorite instrument changes very often but right now I'm pretty amazed about reaktors "methaphysical function" eventhough I still havent used it alot, I love the way you can abuse this thing.

Hm, and hardware is simply to expensiv for me right now, and the choice is very big too hope they'll bring a G3 "take your time clavia" I would curtainly buy that one. Monomachine and Sidstation by Elektron are two things I want, I'm C-64 freak since 1989 so it's a must have for me like the "hardsid quattro pci" soundcard aswell, for me that's an instrument too, lol.

I didn't mean to disregard the human voice but I tend to think of it as another instrument Exclamation

I think I understood you right in what you said above, didn't mean to offend you at all just wanted to say that, that's all.

And I didn't think of "disregard" when I read your post! Surprised

peace.

I also don't normally hear the lyrics and just consider the voice as another instrument. However, when the voice is present it is usually psychologically compelling and impossible to ignore.
It seems that in progressive rock, a lot of good music is ruined by bad vocals.

Piano, cello and TB-303. This would make a groundbreaking trio!!

playing...

Piano - hands down, if someone told me I could only play one instrument and had to toss the synths and everything else... piano's still my first love and the one I'd keep with me.

Bass - when I'm jamming with others bass is wonderful. It "feels" right to me.

listening...

I probably tend to notice what they intended to be up front first time through - vocals/chorus/whatever.

Beyond that I sort of naturally focus in on the underneath in between background things - synth lines, bass lines, little guitar parts buried behind things, backing vocals, soundscapes.

Guitar. Limitless possibilities. But I'm a player, so it stands to reason I hear this first.

Generally, I think lyrics ruin what your imagination conjures as to meaning/feeling of a song. On the other hand, vocals can be extemely beautiful. Cocteau Twins are a great example of this. Soundshapes Vs words. Voice as instrument.

Well I listen to a lot of Japanese music so even if I don't know what they are singing, I believe a voice is very important. I can look up the lyrics later, but the voice is very important and should be able to display your emotions without any logical meaning.
Anyway, in an ambient track I look for pads, percussion, and bass. I find it hard to get good bass samples though. I am learning everyday however. Smile

Smile which one? curious me!

I think there are so many to simply say vocoder.
Probably that's exactly what you mean "simply any vocoder", lol.

Hi I think the voice is probably the most versatile instrument

when I listen to music, I dont tend to listen to the lyrics, I like sounds, which are unusual, I try to listen to the whole thing not individual instruments.

is dovdimus prime a pinhead DLT?????, or some kind of man-lion genetic cross breed???

I guarantee this is different -

the voice is the only instrument everyone is born with,

think about it we can even make drum noises with our mouths, we can squeal like a piggy, do bass or guitar noises, or grunt, make deep rumbly sounds,

why not stand in the street & practise, go on !!!

I saw a baby born with a drum kit once, the mother cursed extremely when the bass drum popped out!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm gonna go with the guitar. But I'm partial to it since it's my main instrument. I think it adapts easily and quickly to all kinds of music. It is so expressive. The guitar can add emotion to any piece. It mutates nice when in the hands of the right player. When you run it through a synth, it does curious things when triggering other musical voices (piano, strings, drums). The triangle is also an outstanding choice due to its mobility Wink

I am definitely in the camp of not paying attention to lyrics - though i love the presence of the voice. I honestly just don't care too much about what's being said. It's definitely just another instrument - probably my favorite one.

Voice aside, i don't realy have a preference. As many of you know by know, i enjoy making instruments out of just about anything. ;)

speaking of the human body as an instrument......

perhaps some clever euro can come up with...

'music made entirely out of human flatulence'

All I really give a fuck about is the lyric and the charisma of the vocalist. The rest is the rest.

It's why I think Lou Reed is phenomenal and celine Dion can fuck off.

Sometimes I enjoy instrumental music. Though rarely. Even the "experimental" stuff (whatever that means) I like has vocals. I probably wouldn't enjoy Can as much as I do if it weren't for Damo Suzuki.
