Nope. these are unmastered, and not 100% final mixes.
They are getting close though...what are your thoughts? |

The mixes are being tweaked all the way up to the mastering date in a couple of weeks.
I assume you ask because you find the web snippets rough or unpolished. I assure you that this is mostly out of choice. We've had some mixes that were done in a more polished manner, and it just sounded like another dancy electronic album. No thanks.
Part of what I'm trying to achieve with the overall sound is a feeling of voyeurism - like you're listening to something that you shouldn't be privy to. I don't see this thing as music - more of an audio collage. |

my thought is that the femaile voice that is spoken/whispered is too sibilant..[i.e. peaking around the 1-10khz range , and has a slight 'whistling' sound on the sibilants like 's' and 't'
also, the voice cuts above the mix and sounds too 'raw'...the music is deep and evocative but the voice sounds like a plain voice-over...compromises the mood when the voice pops in over the mix
perhaps you can use some compression on the vocals to get them to sit 'inside' the mix
and also use an eq to cut above , say, 5k _________________ Spiral Recordings |

i hear you when you say you are going for a sense of 'voyeurism'..
and you mixed the vocals in the fashion you did, to acheive this effect
in my humble pinion..almost there, but not quite
and considering how important the vocals are in this piece, they key would be to be to find the 'sweet spot' for the vox...[no pun intended] _________________ Spiral Recordings |

Paul, I very much appreaciate your input.
Here are my thoughts - I, too, find the vox a bit sibilant. However, I also find that the mastering engineers I use typically de-ess the entire mix to reduce upper midrange harshness. De-essers are a strange breed - good ones are great, bad ones make you sound lispy. In the past, I have found without exception that when I leave that part of the process to the mastering engineer the end result is better.
Talk to me - does this make any sense to you, or do I sound like I'm spewing out my ass?
Ya got some ears on ya, I'll give you that. |

if you guys are getting a proper mastering job, then that is great...
a 'real' mastering job can work wonders...very worhtwhile
but i'm not sure how that will help the vocal sit in the mix better
perhaps they will use a bus compressor... _________________ Spiral Recordings |

Multi-band compressor, to be exact. I like to leave the mastering guy room at the top and bottom so he can add sparkle and depth - as a result, the midrange (ie. vox) tend to recede slightly. |

interesting...
i guess the 'smile' curve will reduce that mid-range..
having a mastering engineer whose work you know must be very helpful while mixing... _________________ Spiral Recordings |

Very, very carefully.
In all seriousness, we're considering various options, but I cannot even think about the shit untill the actual record is done. |

I've been producing/engineering records of all kinds for more than 10 years. Everything from adult contemporary to punk to dance music to hiphop. Name it - if it pays, I'll record it. Provided I like the personalities involved.
Genre means nothing to me in the context of working. I either like the people or i don't. If I like them, i like working on their music, regardless of it's sound.
I've also done a fair bit of playing to pay the bills - both on stage and in the studio. The same guidelines mentioned above apply.
The Sex Album was cool 'caus it threw me into a creative environment that I'm not used to. It's Jess's first foray into the world of audio, as she is priamrily a film/video artist. This made it more fun for me because she is not bogged down in music conventions and communicates her ideas (of which she has tons - one of the most inately musically talented people I've known) through unconventional language. |
