Ventrilio server installed Subject description: We need help testing and evalating |
|
|
I've installed a Ventrilio server for electro-music.com. Ventrilio is an audio conferencing systems used extensively by gamers. It is similar to the old Skype conference call which unfortunately no longer exists. Ventrilio is like another chat room, but with audio instead of typing. The cost is moderate, and we are on a 30 day money back trial.
Shane, Les and I tried it out last night and it proved to be quite nice. For me it is more satisfying than the conventional chat room, but I think both technologies have their appropriate usage.
To use it you need a mic and headphones. It's like using Skype, more or less. You can download free client software (OSX or Windows) at this link:
http://www.instantventrilo.com/download-ventrilo.php
Install this and try to connect to our server. Here is the information you need:
Server name: electro-music.com
IP ADDRESS: 74.63.40.184
PORT: 6012
HOSTNAME: conf.electro-music.com
Default channel: schmooze
Use your electro-music.com forum username. There is no password at the moment.
There is a very nice client tutorial here: http://www.ventrilo.com/tutorial.php
You should use the settings button to set up your micorphone and audio output devices.
By default the client will use voice activate talk. This is called VOX in the communications industry. You can also use Push To Talk, PTT. When you turn this on in the settings menus the default PTT key is the left control key.
Once we get some members using this and it seems appropriate, we will make this permanent. If we have any trouble with unwanted interlopers, we can password protect the channel.
You can coordinate conversations in the chat room as needed. _________________ --Howard

Folks, I am super excited about this Ventrilo software! It's like a Christmas gift to me. Using a monstrosity of cables I was able to set it up so that I could do my show and also output the ventrilo audio of everyone talking including me out to my radio server port. Then Shane and Howard listened and blessed it as sounding good, so all the audio quality is there and it works great.
Now we can do live interviews, the Game Show, the Insane Show, and all kinds of new interactive live shows on our station - wow! The only problem is that my cable monstrosity had both computer's headphones out jacks driving into each other, so I'm lucky I didn't blow up my computers' audio cards in the process! I'm so eager to try out this software on tomorrow's Les Hall Show that I stayed up all night building a 2:1 fixed gain stereo mixer to solve that problem. I had all the parts so it cost nothing.
Anyway, DO give this a try, it's a big step forward for electro-music radio!

I tested the mixer and it works perfectly. Now I'm ready to do a show Friday with this thing. Who wants to be on it?

Good, Les. I'll be happy to be interviewed on your show since this week I'm not driving down to Philly on Friday, but Saturday. I'll be around off and on today to help you test it out.
We don't want to just copy the Ventrilio stream because it isn't stereo. I'm sure you've figured that out. It's also only 32 kbs as well. I'm still looking for some software like this that runs a higher audio rates.
Anyone know of anything? _________________ --Howard

Howard, that sounds great, we could do an interview or conversation telling how you started electro-music and it's history or something. We can also play music etc. With my setup, edcast re-encodes the audio at 128kbps so no problem.

32kb is pretty normal. The data bandwidth is really dependent on the codec you use, it can be as low as 8kb (maybe even less) with some codecs, but the audio bandwidth is pretty narrow with one of those codecs. There are higher bandwidth codecs but for voice you really don't need them. We can develop some guidelines for effective use; basically any online gaming headset seems to do the trick.
I like Ventrilo, I used to use Teamspeak a lot, and I'm finding that Ventrilo seems to have better echo rejection and shorter latency. Nice choice. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

the only problem I see is that ventrillo doesn't work on linux.
There is a 3rd party client that may work, but I can't get it to install correctly. |

Got it working on Linux today
What to do: go to www.mangler.com and download the source (or binary if that's available). If building from source, be sure that you have the libspeex, libgsm, gtkmm and libpulse development packages. One of the things I encountered and isn't mentioned on the website is that GTK version => 2.16 is needed. For me that meant an upgrade to Fedora 11 or higher.
Good luck! |

Doesnt seem like Ventrilo is getting its money's worth like we had hoped.
I check into Ventrilo occasionally... and it seems like its not getting much use.
Is anyone using Ventrilo?
In regards to funding the electro-music website...
As much as I myself enjoy Ventrilo, I have to ask the question is it worth the money each month for the service?
If it's not going to be used much, then maybe the expense per month is too much. I believe mosc said its around $80 a month for the service.
thoughts? _________________ ElectroCasa |

Shane, I thought it was $80 a year which is cheap enough and great value. I plan to use Ventrilo for interviews on my shows, just haven't gotten organized with interviewees yet. Bill and others would like to be interviewed. I also would like to chat in Ventrilo, but you have to come into the text chat and tell me when you would like to Vchat. Looking forward to it man!
