Tom, About ten years ago during the pre-911 economic boom I helped start a medical company that was working on a miniature injectable radiation sensor for cancer patients. Currently they use sensors taped to the skin and computer models to guestimate how much radiation reaches the tumor, but with this device the actual radiation amount is known. There are many other applications of the technology related to cancer treatment including temperature and pH sensing.

It was very satisfying to work on a product that might one day save people's lives. Unfortunately I received a fury of personal attacks that trigerred a schizophrenic episode in 2000 and I had to leave the company. But the good news is they pay royalties to the inventors of their patents, and I walked away with a bunch of stock options which I exercised so now I'm a shareholder in the company.

This was the first holiday bonus that they've sent out so it was a welcome surprise!

Les

p.s. the Mac mini rocks. I highly recommend it over any other computer for the price unless you have a specific reason to get something else.

Awesome!!!! well done

and enjoy the Mac too...

Thanks! I also bought a pair of wireless headphones with Mic (Logitech) which work really great! They are comfy and go 6 hours on a charge. Built in volume control and on/off switch. The only problem so far is that the Mac mini will not boot properly with the wireless USB adapter plugged into it. It stalls, so I have to remove the adapter and put it back in for the Mac mini to boot. This is a problem that I am willing to put up with, but it kind of sucks. Oh well - if that's all I have to complain about then I don't have complaints!

Les

Funny you mention that, we're having a problem with the USB adsl modem on the new MacBook Pro we use in the Boiar studio.
We get a couple of crashes till it boots properly.
Might be something related to the OS...
Let's hope for a fix Smile

Got my Android 2.0 phone a couple of days ago. A Motorola Milestone (in the U.S. you'd call it a Droid).

It doesn't beat the iPhone in all respects, but it's great to program (the integration with Eclipse running on my Mac has worked smoothly enough), it has dual touch and the power you feel when being able to launch a remote shell into the phone where you can run ls and ps is significant. Smile

I also like the inegration with gmail (you get a notification when a new email has arrived just as if it were an SMS, for example). I have no problem succumbing to dictators as long as - like Google - they make good stuff that allows me the freedom to make my own programs.

/Stefan

After realizing that somehow everyone's life was not complete without bad guitar playing, I got myself a guitar and a book of lessons.

Figured I would enjoy it, and so far so good ^^

That makes two of us Very Happy
And to cite Richard Thompson: “I'm glad there are a lot of guitar players pursuing technique as diligently as they possibly can, because it leaves this whole other area open to people like me.”

Welcome to the forum MTGNecro!

We need a picture of your guitar - without a picture it didn't happen Laughing

BTW, I'm in the same situation as ocp and yourself in having recently picked up the guitar. So much fun, and some frustration too (it's not easy to play guitar!). Perhaps the three of us can start a band with people lacking in technique Razz

Alternate tunings with drone strings, that's the key to good guitar playing!

You figured it out, Ark! I can actually play tolerable guitar in its official tuning, but I have logged so many more hours working out technique on the banjo, that it seems a shame not to use it. It drives my son nuts when he picks up one of my retuned guitars, but he's got plenty of his own.

Folks, I'd love to hear you extol the virtues of alternative tunings, both open and otherwise, over at our Strings'n'Things sub-forum!

A Euphonix MC Control controller... Busy adding softkeys. It's playing with the MOTU mixer on the screen, playing Mackie HUI while it simultaneously uses Eucon for all other applications as they gain focus.

Pretty good, actually, better than that Shuttle thing to the right of the MC. The encoders seem to be rather high quality.

Yes, there is a perceptible flicker at the bottom of the screen, which I have managed to mitigate by turning the backlight intensity down. I can't tell if this is a refresh or backlight problem.

It's a refresh issue apparently, I just wondered if they had fixed it.

Apparently its much better in countries with 60hz AC.

I have had three of them and mine all flickered.

Three, eh? Shocked The flicker was only noticeable on the bottom part of the screen, and when I dimmed it slightly it disappeared. One would think that simply changing to 75Hz refresh they'd have been able to fix that.

Mine flickers like mad over all the bloody screen.

Maybe they have made some improvements, I gave up sending them back in the end!

Ooh, nice. There's something about those velvet inlay cases. Why don't we get those for synths?

How is the git? What made you import it?

/Stefan

Yes, Stefan, why indeed don't we get more custom synths in velvet cases... Nowadays synths are mostly a download, aren't they - no wonder I'm getting more into guitars, eh? Laughing

The experience is a new one coming from Gibson -type guitars, with a really thin neck, 25.5" scale and jumbo frets, but so far it feels like the super smooth playing axe I was hoping for.

The reason for the import is that these are only made for the Japanese market. We gajins aren't worthy of guitars made by Samurais in rice paper huts at the foot of Mount Fuji, you know Smile

There are some more pictures over in Strings and things.
