I just spent about 2 months learning as much as I can about Arabic and different ethnic rhythms. I started making a large library of chords so I could then drag and drop some rhythms in. It's been a great and fast flow so I wanted to share the midi library.

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

The library is a pack of traditional rhythms used in lot of Arabic music and Tabla. The rhythms are used with tabla and dumbek as well as other drums.

I wrote out the rhythms as midi and collected them all together. This pack has 102 rhythms. Since it is all MIDI files it can be used with any DAW. They are all organized with there traditional names. Using this as a bases for your drum beats you can create some complex and unique patterns. It's a free download of Tribal Rhythms.

Hope you find this as a useful resource in your music production as well.

Hi Subaqueous!!

I just looked at your website and I'm very impressed. I bookmarked your site so I could study all your articles about Ableton & MIDI. I am kind of a beginner, I bought my SLMKII MIDI controller in October & set out to learn enough that I could do a solo performance at E-M this September. Laughing

So thank you for the lessons, and maybe I will buy some of your instruments when I get the chance.

I like that you use these teeny little cheap MIDI controllers. I had my eye on those but someone persuaded me to buy the Cadillac of controllers instead, but guess what, it STILL doesn't have enough buttons (there is no such thing as enough buttons), so I'm wondering if I could daisy chain one of those little Nano's on and use it for controlling effects!

Laura- don't overlook your qwerty keyboard as another source for buttons in Abe. They are great for quick on/off toggles. I'm not sure if daisy chaining the Nanos is an option or not.

That's a great idea! Since you are familiar with 'Abe" maybe you have some input/suggestions? I'm trying to make effects more accessible to the MIDI controller. You have to load an effect module into each track; it is not really intuitive or spontaneous; I am trying to create the software equivalent of an all-purpose all=around effects rack and then make it accessible to all the tracks in Ableton's sequencer. So far I have managed to map an on-off switch to the effect rack using the drum pads (they're not good for much else.)

With the flexibility that Abe possess, there is no right or wrong way. But, what I think you are wanting to do is to have a "go-to" effect rack that you can route signals (audio/midi) to right? Easy. Put the effects you want on the send/return channel. That way you don't have to load multiple instances of the same effect on multiple channels thus compromising your CPU, and keeping that low in a live performance is a must.
Once you have built your rack, then you can assign your knobs on the Novation to control the parameters of your effects, as well as your send/return knobs. I hope this helps.
