Hey everybody,
I'm in the process of doin my second hand wound magnetic pickup for a stringed instrument (kinda).
The first was a full soap slab 4wire humbucker for my bass. It turned out perfectly, powerful, punchy, brite. Ask if you want details.
This next one is a single toroidal design for a two stringed "timboura" (electric tamboura). It will also have an under the bridge piezo, and a soft pot ribbon controller installed under the smaller string.
Now,
I know that most guitar pickups fall in the 3-10K impedance range, and I'm pretty sure the bass humbucker was around that for each coil. This one is using slightly thicker gauge wire (about 0.2mm diam) and I have already laid down about 2400 winds. Sadly, my roll of wire has run out, and it only has a resistance of 500R, I know the impedance will be higher than that, but I'm just unsure how low I can leave it. I'm fine with getting some more wire and joining it if it's worth getting up to at least 1K. Or should I just tailor a pre-amp which is especially good for low impedance pickups?
There will be a preamp of some sort going in anyway to blend the piezo, and being tethered to the Appendage Ribbon Controller, I could probably even send a +/-15V line down to it as well if need be.

What do ya reckon?

Yes, I had a feeling that would be the only answer! Laughing
But, do I,
a) get some more .2mm, join it to what I've already done and see how much I can fit on? (I'm estimating at least 2.5 times what I've already done, which would bring the resistance up to a more healthy 1K+ and around 6000 turns)
or
b) unwind this .2mm and canabalise a standard single pickup for a load of the really fine stuff and start again with that? This would probably end up above 12-14000 turns! Shocked But, I'll do it, for my art, if need be. Confused Laughing

Well, I think that depends on precisely how much you are willing suffer for your art and how lazy you are by nature.

If you're not sure, use this simple formula to decide:

r = s - l

s = willingness to suffer for your art, 0.0 to 1.0
l = lazyness factor, 0.0 to 1.0

if r < 0 => splice wire
if r > 0 => start anew with cannibalised wire
if r = 0 => leave it as it is and use an opamp

Razz
