Next week I will do a lecture at the Lindbladt Studio's, universitat Göteborg.
As the title says, it is about spaciousness: ambiophonics, reverberation, pseudo-stereo,delay, pitch shifters, Glitch, Waveguiding and weird FX. All DIY, architectured with NMG2 modules. Hope to see you there Smile

Any chance of getting your slides after the talk is completed?

We are always looking for ways to use the Surround 5.1
in
our
planetarium . It is circular seating for 85 with the speakers located somewhat asymmetrically above the audience at the base of the dome, and so therefore not standard 5.1 at all. We are always thinking about ways to make the space better. The acoustics are great.

Thanks, Roland.

It does get better each time that we get time to work in there. We have plans to just explore some sounds and visuals next weekend, not a performance, just an exploration with some of my students. It's a very magical space, and it always teaches us something.

Hi Dale,

As you see on the picture it was all in stereo.
But it was great to do. Talking and patch-performing about panning, DIY reverbs/Delays. Ambiophonics and physical modeling.
I have a Sonic Core Xite-1 here now, so I'm experimenting on both platforms.

It looks like fun! I'm sure you enjoyed it Smile

Our latest adventure in the planetarium is that the audio team in my software engineering course has suggested that in our expanding-universe game, as the universe expands on the dome, we should jack up the reverb in sync with the visual expansion so that it feels like the room is expanding. That particular idea was my son Jeremy's (he was voted to be team leader). We are also experimenting with other aspects of the game, such as mapping degree-of-nesting of atoms at a single location to FX such as flanging or phasing. I am putting MIDI controller messages into the game-to-MIDI mapper, and the students can decide how to map those controller messages to FX, so we can experiment.

We are also starting to work with spatialization of game activity on the dome to location in the 5 speakers around the base of the dome. That is a bit more complicated. It pushes the design towards a full matrix of 16 MIDI channels x 5 speakers = 80 channels to mix in the limit, so that we can scale each channel's note according to its visual atom's distance from every one of the 5 speakers. We are trying to simplify before we actually build any software for that part of it. I would like to get my son or someone to do a master's thesis along these lines. Spatial sound in planetariums has no standards, and there is still research to be done.

There are some papers here and here when you are in a reading mood Very Happy

Take care, Dale

Thank you so much Dale,

As I was trying to say, I'm busy with creating space in the modular world. Creating architectures that suggest space but it feels real by hearing. I even made architectures that reverse the sound directly with the NMG2. And building pipe/plate architectures to build your own instruments is very interesting. An example you will find here: https://soundcloud.com/roland-kuit/presure-de-nono
Just had a quick look into your papers...very interesting!
Tomorrow we drive off to Frankfurt, so that will be a great read Very Happy
I'll come back on this.

The Planetarium as a musical instrument Very Happy

Very interesting. Do you make use of wave terrain synthesis too?

Take care,
Roland

Cool track, Roland Cool I haven't done anything with wave terrain synthesis beyond reading about it just yet. Usually I have some kind of human-symbolic-structure in mind, a game or a language involved in the process of mapping visuals <-> audio <-> a performance. Having dancers dance through multiple Kinects in the planetarium and use a combination of direct shadow projection and Kinect-driven projection of abstract representations of body is something I'd like to do.

With 4 courses to teach each semester, I am not at that point yet. I will probably stage a piece with 3 of us driving dome graphics via sensored stringed instruments in March. Also, my software engineering students have come with with some spatial game mapping ideas that entail writing some software this summer.

The terrain synthesis is something to keep in mind, however. Thanks for the suggestion. Hope that your drive has gone well.

Dale

I've read you publication. I wish I coud see/hear it one time Dale.
Maybe this article will interest you too.

Thanks, Roland! I am planning immersion in these matters during this summer's break. This paper is on my early reading list Smile

Sonology, The Hague, works with Wave Field Synthesis too. 2 Wave Field studio's, situated in Leiden, can be used by students for experiments and concerts.

A lot reading fun Dale!
