Please take a look at this and tell me what you think (see attached)-in it there are 2 diode symbols, what I would think would nrmally mean type of clipping, but doesnt make sense here-and even if so-what does that mean if it doesnt specify a type of diode (1n5247 or 1n4148 etc)
i couldnt figure it out as there is no reference to a SPECIFIC part (no 42k resistor, or .01uf cap or 4148 diode or what-have-you).
I havent seen it befre but im far from an expert.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP YOU MAY BE ABLE TO PROVIDE

sincerely

Si stands for Silicium (like a 4148 diode). Other diodes that are often used in these kinds of circuits are germanium (Ge). It does work as a clipper/limiter in this ciruit.

yea i thought id seen that symbol before for a specific type of clipping, like bilateral r whatever.
huh. well itd be a LOT easier to understand if hed just said 4148 or whichever one he used. obviously the diodes he used didnt say "Si" on them.
He also left out the Vcc +&- for the tl0621 etc

well, Thank you
-I appreciate it. I coudlnt find it by searching, just came up with "Si Units" which are, apparently, some unit of measurement also used in schematics.

Just FYI, I left the diodes completely out of the circuit and it worked fine..so just fyi if anyone builds it.

It is not uncommon to label non-critical diodes or transistors with just Si.

In elektor schematics you'll also find DUS, TUP, TUN - where D = Diode, S = Silicon, T = Transistor, U = Universal, N = NPN, P = PNP.

BTW, not all diodes are labeled, so when you pick one from the heap it is not always clear what exactly it is - when a quick check with a meter reads 0.6V - 0.7V it must be silicon.

I guess silicium is dutch,.. didn't realize it was silicon in english (since we have the word siliconen in dutch too).

makes me wonder if fake boobs only conduct in one direction ?

Only when layered from silicon with different dopings Shocked

ah now I get it Embarassed :

Silicon is a nonmetallic element (number 14 on the periodic table) found
in the earth’s crust. The element is a major component in semiconductors,
and its high conductivity makes it useful in solar power cells.

Silicone is a class of silicon-based chemical compounds used in paints,
adhesives, lubricants, and breast implants, among other applications.

Yup, and silicium is Latin Laughing

It is funny tho, in English a lot of Latin words are used where we use Dutch words, and the other way around .. or something Rolling Eyes

Having a chemistry background, I can usually work out what is meant, even if names are misused (e.g. silicone instead of silicon). I do draw the line at spelling sulphur with an f (now the official spelling):

SI units cover the whole of science and technology - not just electronics Very Happy

Don't know if this helps anyone - I just felt like saying it...

Just now seeing this, Si si hombre, it should just work Exclamation

The idea is that it distorts a bit softer on overload with the diodes in, but you may actually like more clippy clippings.

Otoh if you'd want even softer clippings at a lower level you could put in Ge diodes.

thanx guys, def. the more info im armed with-the more dangerous i am.
fr whatever its worth, the gargletron isnt really all that impressive, i normally throw in lm324-based lopass filters in stuff all the time-its an easy circuit that runs on 9v and is really effective..so, fr whatever its worth-i dont think this particular project is worth the relative time/effort involved for the outcome.
some one else might disagree but i tend to want MORE effective filters, not less, but then im hardly ever using for, say, vocal, or non-distrted guitars.
