So yeah um, I finally got my hands on an Adafruit provided Arduino Program that takes in eight cap sense connections and outputs MIDI on the defined percussion MIDI format. It's a great little tutorial that you can read about here:

https://learn.adafruit.com/circuit-playground-fruit-drums/midi-drums

My question has to do with the geometries of percussion instruments, specifically when implemented as capacitive sense devices. That requires some explanation i guess. The Circuit Playground is pre-wired with 1 MEG resistors on each of it's eight input pins. so you can have up to eight cap sense inputs, sweet! and that is right out of the box. My plan is to make a drum station on my 3D printer that connects to these eight inputs. pretty neat, huh?

The specific question is: can I combine inputs around each other to make 2D and 3D drum sensors? I plan to 3D print the sticks in conductive filament and make sensors the same way, or perhaps as a combo of insulating filament and 3D filament. The exact form is uncertain.

So that's more conjecture and planning than explanation, but anyway that's what I have in mind. Please advise.

Les

Here are two views of the rough-hewn version of the enclosure for the project (including conductors).

Two shots of a robotic design from a long time ago (well only two years ago, but long enough since I've been in 3D printing only three years). I kind of thought of it like a signature emblem, like on a car hood or a product facade. I called it rather unimaginatively "Robotica".

I printed that last one or similar (I made the length 2*sqrt(2) which is about 3 or slightly under). It looks more like a torso and also looks less like a Star Wars Imperial Ship, lol. I printed it in huge size! It's bigger than my hand, se below.

My desk is becoming cluttered with shapes from the 3D printer! Time to make a decision as to which shape to use on NYE. The robotic clogo seems to be the winner! note orange slices that do fit, but prevent the top half from closing!

Pretty cool Les.

It kinda reminds me of the cylons from BSG!

yes i think the shape is well known in sci-fi so i'm abandoning it. i did cut it apart and tape it back up with sense wires to the board as shown, it worked but poorly.

I realized a radial configuration would work best so I made the attached object.

It works well. The plan is to make a larger one that is big enough for a nursing home resident in a wheelchair to interact with it. This would involve wires dropping down with fishing weights on the ends of them.

With the limited capability of the mock-up i can get notes but not controlled notes. not that that's necessary, just it's kind of chaotic which i like also.
