I've heard about some frequency to voltage converter like LM 2907 and LM 2917.
It's just an idea ,I'm a totally newbie in electronics ,but can be those IC's used for build an universal monophonic synth?the basic concept is:

Frequency---> converter--->Voltage--->VCO

this converter (if really works) can be built in parallel with the audio to gate converter.

Ok this is a job for you, electronic genius!

FCO Smile well i think it´s getting too complicated but if you like to play whit the idea - here is something to add.
theTCS230 Color Light to Frequency Converter!
it´s no normal photo transistor or photo resistor - it can see also colors not only the intensivity.
Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.
you can have it also in DIP-package

The output of the device is designed to drive a standard TTL or CMOS logic inputs

Price: on Parallax.com $4.75

the biggest problem is that the output voltage is:

Vout=K*f

where k is a costant Vout in Volts and f in Hz.so Vout is proportional to frequency.so doubling the frequency will not increase Vout to 1 Volt .We want instead a logarithmic law between voltage and frequency:

Vout=log2(f)+K

for example f=2 --->Vout=1 ; f=4---> Vout=2.............

So we can use a logarithmic amplifier (?) to convert the linear law into a logarithmic law
