Value Control Sequencer, Note Control Sequencer |
 |
|
I love the control sequencer, and I know many others have sung its praises too. However, I find there to be a bit of a problem in that the GUI of the module is basically just a slight variation on the Level Sequencer - which is fine if you're using the output for modulation where precise values aren't so important. But there's no way of being able to tell the exact values of the levels without pointing the mouse at each bar - unlike with the value and note sequencers.
This is annoying when you want to use the output data of the control sequencer for controlling stuff where precise values are important - such oscillator note (pitch) input, MUX modules, and indeed other control sequencers. It doesn't make it impossible by any means, but it does make it difficult.
When I wire up a standard (non-control, clock stepped) sequencer for controlling a MUX, a control sequencer, or (obviously) an oscillator pitch, I will use a value or a note sequencer, as I can see clearly the values represented (and therefore which channel, step, or note will be selected). I will use a multiplier module on the signal where appropriate - such as one set to 4x between a value sequencer and a control sequencer, so that the val seq output will be scaled up to the order of magnitude appropriate for the control input of the ctrl seq input. That is, when the selected step on the val seq has a numerical value of, say, 5, then the control sequencer will be set to step 5. This way I can use the numerical values of 1 to 16 on a bipolar value sequencer to control a control sequencer.
My wish is for a value control sequencer module, and possibly a note control sequencer, so that it would be possible to see the levels set just as with the regualr val and note seqs. Or perhaps even just some kind of extra feature on the existing control sequencer to overcome this problem. |

| Functionally, I've found these sequencers to be identical. So either one can be used in a given situationand the result would be the same. I think Clavia *put* those two in there for teh same reason you are asking: one is for visual accuity, the other for numerical accuracy. And you could always bounce back & forth using the "down arrow" in the upper left corner to get things "close" then switch sequencer type to tune it in. The values stay when you change the sequencer type. |

Erm, thanks for your response jksuperstar, but I'm afraid that's not quite what I'm talking about.
Yeah, I'm well aware that the Value, Level and Note Sequencer modules are functionally almost identical, and can be used interchangeably, but I was referring to the Control Sequencer - the sequencer where the step is selected by the input control signal rather than advanced one place by each clock (or other logic) signal. The Control Sequencer looks very similar to the Level Sequencer, as the values are displayed in the same way. What I want is a Control Sequencer that can display exact values the way the Value and Note Sequencers can. |

Unless you have a G2 engine, the best way of setting sequencer values is the UI. Just press the patch button and spin away.
Just using the editor, if you need to set some narrow range, precise values, the ctrl+left/right and up/down arrows works much better than the mouse.
The note sequencer is better for um, notes though.

Nice tip, G2ian. However, it's not the setting of values I'm concerned with here, but the rather the graphical representation of them. With the value sequencer, a number is displayed for every step. With the note sequencer, there is the piano roll where you can see which semitones are being shown. With the level and control sequencers, several adjacent values can be represented by the same vertical pixel position, and you can't tell what those values are anyway. |

CTRL+F8 will show you the values, best to be done now I guess. _________________ Jan

Thx Blue Hell, nice tip - although, as I'm on a Mac, I found that it's CTRL+OPTION+F5 instead.
All the same, it'd still be nice to have a control sequencer that would display values all the time.
