This refers to a previous thread in some sense, but it makes no sense to add this nonsense there ... unless the admins disagree Smile

Anyway, the kumler were on their way, and there I sat with a digital camera (sorry about the focus problems: you try taking pcitures of highly reflective (greasy) food with a cheap AF camera, and no photographic talent whatsoever).

I can't help myself, I have to ask, What is that stuff in the first photo. I recognize the taters and carrots, and have been told the yellow stuff is just that.

Yes, the yellow stuff is .. well.. simply.. yellow stuff.

Those grey balls are.. basically just grey balls.

Could be.. or it could also be some kind of old tar that has been cured and blended with elk droppings. There is no way to taste the which is which anyway. Shocked

Ah, burned. I would never have thought to try that. You Norwegains are so creative with food.

Mmm. It was quite delicious. It was indeed bacon, the missus came with "I think I have knackered the bacon", to which my reply: "Yes, it's completely f..." She: "You're supposed to be supportive". Me (tasting said bacon): "Actually, it will be fine. I'm sure".

The thing with kumler is that they are actually better "rechauffé"*, i.e. re-heated (preferably fried in bacon fat. God knows there is enough of it). In this way they get a "potato cake" feeling, and the texture becomes less, well, gluey.

*Excuse this gratuitous use of Frenchified cooking terms.

I got my own back today by making jam roly poly with some out-of-date vegetable suet I found at the back of the cupboard. I should have photographed that too -- it looked like a portion of severed limb that has been immersed in water for a few weeks, a wrist perhaps.

I'm just saying that Norway is known for its excellent scenery. When we were there we ate a lot of excellent smoked fish - superb - but very expensive. There is great cheese too. I liked the food, but... well... in this respect, Norway ain't Italy, if you get my drift.

Funny to see some Brits being so outspoken over Norwegian food Very Happy

I mean the Norwegians may have their yellow stuff and white maybe, and indeed to me as well it looks like it might need some getting used to ... , but I clearly remember some black stuff and brown stuff, from my being in London a few years ago, which was, lets say, pretty undefinable as well ... but then again I also remember my grandmother quite well making a habit out of doing this greenish stuff, I'll spare you the details about that Very Happy

I am not Brit so...I researched "lutefisk" and got results like: "nauseating sordid gunk", "unimaginably horrific", "lasting psychological damage". I am sure no one could get similar results for "pizza" Exclamation

Seraph, I think norwegians mostly eat pizza.... Allegedly we eat the most pizza in Europe per capita Shocked

To counter the pizza-craze and strengthen traditional values, I'll point to 'rakfisk'. You haven't lived until you've had a meal of rakfisk, aquavit and beer - I'm not joking, this is for gourmets.

I trust you even though the translation "fermented fish" makes me a little suspicious. What if you don't drink alcohol beverages?

Well, please see the movie "Free Jimmy" - it is out now. Be prepared for some ethnic norwegian madness.
