Please allow me to introduce myself. . . |
 |
|
I've been posting on this forum for a little while and have yet to introduce myself.
I live in Kingsport, Tennessee which is in the upper east section of the state. It is very pretty here as I am surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains and lots of TVA lakes. Originally I am from Cohasset, Massachusetts, which is a small town 20 miles south of Boston. I attended Boston University and graduated with a Journalism degree in 1974. I eventually became a photojournalist and worked for many newspapers. I had my mid-life crisis in 1990 and moved my family to Tenn., retired my still cameras and became a free-lance videographer.
Throughout most of my life I have dabbled in music. Mostly guitar and saxophone. I am a Rolling Stones and James Brown fanatic. My absolutely favorite musician of all time is John Coltrane. I shall never forget the night in 1973 I listened to A Love Supreme and started to understand where Coltrane was coming from.
But if you have listened to the music I posted, you might ask how I leaped into synths. Although I bought my first synth a year and a half ago, my desire to delve into abstract soundscapes goes back to my teenage years in the late 60s.
I was a Mothers of Invention fan, and I noticed a quote from Edgar Varese on the liner notes of the Mother's first album. "The modern day composer refuses to die." I was intrigued and asked my high school music appreciation teacher about Varese. He gave me a Varese album and I was hooked. About that same time came Wendy Carlo's, Switched On Bach. I knew that electronic music was what I wanted to do. But I didn't know how to get started. When I started applying to colleges I couldn't find anything about electronic music. I even went to experimental schools looking, but they didn't know what I was talking about. So I gave up my search and fell back on my second love, Photography.
The years went by. Often I would find myself waiting for a traffic light to change or sitting in a doctor's waiting room, and I would mentally be putting sounds to moving objects, facial expressions or blinking lights.
About a year and a half ago I had to put some music to a commercial I was working on. I couldn't find what I was looking for on any of my background music cd's. Someone recommended I get ACID. After I made my soundtrack, I started playing with other loops in ACID. I was able to put sounds to abstract ideas in my head. But loops seemed like cheating.
I bought Cakewalk Sonar and Native Instruments' Absynth. Finally I could scratch the itch that had been with me all those years. I proceeded to buy other hardware and software. Eventually I had enough tracks to create my first CD. Although I have done nothing to promote it. This forum is the first time I have let others beside my friends hear any of the tracks. I am just about finished with my second CD.
I found two others who shared my obsession with ambient music and we have formed The Amaranth Signal. We play out at least once a month. We are now looking for different venues. We are currently culling through our past performances to issue our second CD. We have sold a number of our first CD to almost break even.
One of the highlights of the last year was when my son and I went to Harrisburg, PA and saw Rich, Roach, and Serrie perform. I was greatly inspired, and it was wonderful to be surrounded by hundreds of others who love electronic ambient music.
I am also thrilled to have found Electro-music.com _________________ Mark Mahoney
