I had an idea (if this has been done before, please let me know so I'm not stealing anyone's credit) about an alternative to the gate module, which I've tried using for song recording. I record in a slightly noisy environment, so I would like to gate out stuff when I'm silent, but I have difficulty getting the attack right and stuff, so I lose the beginning of words etc.

Anyway, this is not a perfect solution either, but maybe a fun idea... this patch implements a constant blind spot around the zero mark where input audio is blanked out. Low-volume noise will reside in this blind spot and thus be removed completely (you can increase the size of the blind spot with the first morph). This will of course distort the input sound, and to prevent it from being chopped clean off I've put a low-pass filter between the on/off logic (implemented by a pair of compares) and the level module. It consumes 0.1 more cycles and 7.1 more memory than the gate module.

I tried recording some song samples with this and I thought it sounded OK. I added heavy compression and a test tone to this patch. It would be fun to hear your opinions on this. Is there a better way to smooth the signal than that low-pass filter?

/Stefan
