well after a few months of on the shelf, off the shelf work on this module (which originally worked fine until i decided to add more options), i hate to say it but it just might be a fried sn chip. I replaced all the opamps and the PLL chip and here is whats wrong:

everything, and i mean every feature works EXCEPT the envelope modes.

what happens is this:

in one mode the sn voice works as it should, playing a constant tone. in the other mode (the envelope AR mode) nothing happens. there is no response to gate and switching INTO this mode temporarily seems to make the other mode not work either. when i switch back to the other mode, it almost sounds as if a cap is charging up because it takes about a minute before full volume returns and the sound literally fades in.

strange.

ANY ADVICE APPRECIATED....

should i try replacing transistors or caps?

thanks

yes, i think. to the best of my ability. i went through the three pages of schematics and checked off part by part, looking for and redoing solder points, looking for bridges.(if a greenline is following the schematic part by part and marking off the items and checking for shorts)

but i think the problem must have be related to back when i got magic smoke, long ago, a bad power connection, back when i tried to add more logic options. the problem is i could have fried anything or everything.

i suppose i could replace every active component likely to fry, or i could just order a new sn chip. PLease if you have any advice on how to greenline (well) or where to look for likely dead parts, i am game.

thanks as usual

If it's any help, when I built my first ever noise box- which had an SN7 in it, we (I built it with my Mum's cousin- who is an electronics engineer- unlike me Laughing ), were told that the SN was HIGHLY sensitive to static electricity. So it was highly likely that you zapped it some way or another. Shame, but these things do happen. Sad

hey there
i got a new chip and sadly i had to break out the old wide socket to fit the new narrow chip (could not for the life of me get that machined socket unsoldered!!)

ANYWAY-all the functions seem to work now BUT the noise/vco out seems much quieter than the triangle output jack. any reason for this or is there an opamp i should be checking?

thanks all

hopefully i can get this beast working again!!
