I am right now in the middle of watching all the old Doctor Who episodes I can get my fingers on (thanks, piratebay Wink), it's so sad that many of them were lost when a BBC archive burned down and only exist as audio tracks with scene photos today...

Being a German I learned about the existence of this show pretty late in my life, but liked the few episodes I got to see.

Then BBC London handed over Doctor Who to BBC Manchester and they did such an amazing job... The new Doctor blew me away from Eccleston's episode 1 (in which the Autons, maybe an inspiration for Kraftwerk's Showroom Dummies return). The new music is fantastic, all of a sudden the Doctor actually has a budget for special effects (and some people behind them who do a great job too), great actors... I fell in love and as mentioned above am now catching up on old episodes.

And they're fantastic too, in their very own way... If you learn to train your suspension of disbelief and ignore the bad sfx and the (sorry, but it's a fact) sometimes lousy set designs, there's great stories in there too, and some of the actors are big fun as well. Smile I can't decide whether to prefer doctor 2,3 or 4 - I'd say them and the new ones are my favourites. Smile

Oh - and there's so many ideas and concepts in Doctor Who that somehow *today* are standard ideas in Scifi movies and TV series... Wink

Take the Cybermen, invented in 1963 - clearly the forefathers of Star Trek's Borg (and the Star Trek guys do an open nod to the BBC too - the first episode with Borgs in it is called "Q Who"!). Cybernetic, hive controlled beings that invade other worlds and produce more of themselves with the population's (forced) help...

In Norway, the closest thing to an electronic hit would be this one:

Yeah, I've often wondered whether the Autons from "Spearhead from Outer Space" inspired Kraftwerk's Showroom Dummies, or the other way around. Or did they both come from another source or neither?
Spearhead from Outer Space would have to be my favourite Dr Who stories. It's just so damned creepy. I had night mares about it as a kid.
Showroom Dummies is also one of my favourite Kraftwerk songs.
Have you ever heard the cover version done by Senior Coconut? Priceless! Laughed my left lung up and chucked on it! Laughing

Looked up Popcorn on Wikipedia. Apparently Hot Butter covered it off some guy called Gershon Kingsley, who wrote it in 69. Didn't know that...

Indeed it was Gershon Kingsley. IMNSHO none of the million rip-offs sounds anything remotely like it. The original is a wonderfully spaced out thingy:

Gets my vote Smile

Youtube even has him for real.

That original, which I never heard before despite being alive then, sounds much better than the Hot Butter version, in fact, I think it would play just fine, albeit with some serious emphasis below 200Hz, in a dance hall today.

Maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic.

One reason I like this place is that we get a daily education on E-M history. I really like that.

Oh, I even saw Senor Coconut perform live with his band, amazing. Smile Big fun indeed. Smile

I would have to guess that the Autons inspired the Showroom Dummies, Spearhead aired in 1970, a year and a handfull of days before I aired myself. Wink
