Hello all,

I recently acquired for myself a macbook pro. I must say that I am very impressed with the engineering and design that Apple puts into their products. I continue to use my PC frequently, but am trying to switch over more to the mac to learn it and because many of the programs seem to run better. On my PC I use Cakewalk Sonar 6.0 to write MIDI notation and use soundfonts for sounds. Afterwards I transfer them to Soundtrack Pro on the mac, apply EQ and effects, and generally finalize the recording. I am very interested in learning some of the programs for mac, such as Ableton Live and Logic. To put it in basic terms, I have figured out that soundfonts are nice, but not very dynamic, and you certainly can't tailor then without some skill. What I want to do is load or import MIDI files into a program and have them "trigger" wave samples so I can have more realistic sounds. I realize that MIDI is not sound, but computer information. I have used Garage Band and have imported a number of MIDI files, but the program does not have a diverse range of sounds. I was thinking perhaps another one of these programs would be able to accomplish this task for me. Any insight at all would be appreciated. I have been electronic music for a couple years, but have hit a major roadblock here. Thanks.

Kevin

Hi,

To be quite honest if you have the cash then Logic Pro 8 is a fantastic buy.

It comes with a wide range of instrument and FX plugins all of pretty high quality.

The sampler provided is EXS24 with a fairly decent set of sampled instruments.

Ableton live is also a great piece of software but lacking in instruments unless you start buying loads of plugins.

For bang for buck Logic 8 is fantastic.

Hope this helps a little.

Andy
