I had a feeling I should have waited.
For $200 more I could have had an i5 vs. a Core Duo.
And wassup wit dis Thunderbolt?
I can't help but singing it to the tune of the theme song from Underdog. |
Thunderbolt is a blazing new interface, but wonder if it is really going to catch on.
1394 activity sure has tapered off over the years, but it has had a decent run. You don't hear about it being used much these days. _________________ Free Tibet. Release the Panchen Lama from prison. Let the Dalai Lama return to his home. |

Same here. I just bought a new 15" MBP (2GHz i7 quad core), and unlike my old TiG4, it doesn't have a card slot. So there is no way to use eSATA until someone comes up with a Thunderbird adapter. Currently there is nothing available that actually uses Thunderbird, even from Apple. Although the same hole also serves as a display port
They did add a SDXC card slot, but imho it's useless. Not only do I not own anything that uses SD cards, if I did, I could buy a USB SDXC card reader for $5. I would rather have eSATA, or another USB or Firewire jack. |

That's not true. There are already many products that are available on the market, including ones from Apple that use Thunderbolt.
And if you knew that the card slot or adaptor wasn't available yet, why didn't you just hold on a bit until it did? _________________ ACHTUNG!

Even though the Thunderbolt bus is very promising, quite brilliant and all that.. what we really need ASAP is a lot of Thunderbolt gear that is fairly inexpensive and adds connectivity like eSata interfaces with multiplier support. So far much of the 3rd party Thunderbolt gear out there is all about populated disk cabs. And the price demanded for many of these is silly.
Certainly we do need semi pro raids and such, but we need way more to tap the promise of the Thunderbolt bus at something which is not an enterprise market segment price level. This happened fairly fast with USB and Firewire. The same must happen with Thunderbolt. Tomorrow will not do. Yesterday is more like it. As for eSata; shame on you Apple! The fact that products like the latest mac mini did not come with an eSata multiplier aware connector is not a good omen. We need a budget priced Thunderbolt connectivity product ASAP that also provides eSata. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"
