Karlax Subject description: brand new wireless midi instrument |
 |
|
Hi everybody!
This is my first post in this forum and i would talk to you about a brand new midi instrument.
It's a totally new designed wireless controller, which is sensitive to movements that we can give to it.
I paste some functionnalities from the website http://www.dafact.com
| Quote: | - Mechatronics controller
A wide range of continuous sensors featuring :
- 12 bits native sampling at 1 kHz
- Velocity definition
- 4 types of response curves (including one user-editable)
- Adaptative latency (from 1 to 20 ms depending on the characteristics of the signal)
Continuous keys, fugitives, at your fingertips :
Number : 10
Stroke 12 mm
Pistons (under third phalanx)
Number : 8
Stroke : 3 mm
Axis
65 ° Rotation on continuous sensing
12.5 ° Bends on stroke limits
Switches
14 swityches with dedicated MIDI messages
1 joystick (5 directions) allowing both MIDI/OSC messages emission and graphical user interface control
Screen switches
3 switches dedicated to screen graphical interface browsing
- Motion Sensors
6 degrees of freedom
Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) consisting of:
Accelerometer
3 axes with simultaneous attack detection on each axis. Sensitivity + - 3g
Gyroscope
3 axes at 2000°/ second
Inertial sensors processing
High level output data for motion processing
and recognition.**
Controllers and motion sensors special features:
3 modes of operation for binary controllers (switches):
fugitive, toggle, trigger.*
Ability of coupling two actuators to control a single parameter *
A total of 40 sensors generating up to 68 variables |
May be this kind of controller can give a little more "humanity" in laptop live sets.
You must see it in action. Some videos try to give a glimpse of the Karlax possibilities

Nice looking piece of kit!
Are you thinking of doing any cheaper models? |

| amazing looking smart device but personally i think the market to explore is the cheaper one , this price range restricts your sales bigtime and i can respect that angle but really for a business i would be looking at porting this over to much much cheaper units with lower build quality....it is a work of art all the same.........stunning design. |

I think the karlax could be the flagship model (similar to the eigenharp which finally became a range of product).
But it was designed to be robust, provide new way of "playing" and interacting with sound and light and to be beautyfull.
The target user seems to be more performance people like dancerswho can interact with music rather than just follow the music ...
A cheaper version would be great but what feature would you sacrifice ? _________________ Breathe life into your sound:

I agree with the others in terms of price etc. That's an awful lot of money for something which essentially will simply end up being seen as another instrument of the 'post-modernist' age.
I wouldn't want people not to play it, but would it not be better just to use an instrument that has already got the backing of an orchestra, where music written using (standard-ish) notation can be used- so that pieces can be played back exactly how they were written in years to come?
Perhaps I've missed the point, but seeing that this thing is a controller only, I think I'd prefer to buy an (overpriced) EMS VCS3, or even save a little bit more, and buy an Ondes Martenot? _________________ ACHTUNG!

It's really really cool indeed, at least on the demos
But I agree, it seems a bit pricey to me too.
If we forget the motion sensors, it doesn't seem that much more exciting than my Eigenharps Pico.
The motion sensors definitely make it unique, but in practice, it seems an Eigenharps Alpha or an Haken Continuum would likely be nicer to play, but probably not as nice to experiment...
If only it was half that price... I'd definitely be interested in getting one... |
