Is there an alternative to the frequency shifter module? |
|
|
Hello everyone. I'm trying to synthesize realistic sounding drums and so I need a FREQUENCY shifter (not pitch shifter) to recreate the various vibration modes of the drum membranes. The only problem is that the G2 frequency shifter module creates a kind of panning/movement to the sound (even in Mono) which is kind of spoiling the effect. Any ideasfor an alternative? |

it sure does do that panning doesnt it sheridan...
This is a great question.
As I said on some previous posts I really too enjoy using the frequency shifter on drums , especially kicks, it can really beef up the sound, but,
yes really off and unbalanced in the stereo field. Only other thought would be to bounce it down to a mono track within an audio editor, though this I dont think is desireable for many reasons. I wish actually there were more fx and more controls on some of the fx. But alas it is what it is...

I only get modulation on very small shifts, how exactly are you using it? |

A shift of 7 Hz up. The swirling effect is not the end of the world, as I will probably sample the drums and then pick the best one... it's just a shame that I have to sample it to be able to use it! And the frequency shifter is only really needed to recreate the vibrations of drums with PITCHED membranes, so for kicks and snares it's not really a problem.
I searched on the web and found a few 'long-ass' alternatives that still don't quite have the right effect.
I'm starting to wonder if this panning modulation is actually part of a frequency shifter - it seems fairly illogical though.
Oh well, I won't hold my breath for a result on this topic then! |

I'm sorry, I don't get it. What do you mean with 'panning modulation' ? Do you have an example patch maybe ?

The manual states: Quote: | A low Shift amount will
produce a tremolo effect on the Mix output | . That was what I was really talking about, but if you create a stereo sound from using the down and up signals, you also get a kind of phasey panning. |

Ok it indeed can do that effect for you, but's that not the way you'd want to use it for realistic sounding drums I guess, so where is your problem ?
Jan.
Edit : I'm assuming you are working on something as described in : http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan02/articles/synthsecrets0102.asp where only an upwards frequency shift of 7 Hz is being mentioned. |

The snare drum and timpani actually, but yes from SOS.
Apparently, bass drums don't exhibit this frequenct shift. |

My point just to be clear was not to make 'realistic' drum sounds but electronic ones. And I like adding a frequecy shifter to kick drum sounds as it adds a nice bit of extra something special. Thank you for that cool article on SOS Jan, it was a cool thing for me to read. |
