The stepwise ionisation of the air preceding a lightning flash was captured in 3D by the LOFAR radio telescope in The Netherlands.

ah my memory was wrong,. Somehow I thought it started from the ground up and than the big flash came down from the sky
but it is the other way around.

Actually Laughing after reading about lightning in the VPRO tv-guide Shocked ... I was thinking about making a module, so googled a bit for scientific lightning models .. and then stumbled over the above.

The PDF has a graph about breakdown and runaway voltages .. but that is all I could find sofar ... will have to search a bit more for a module.

Edit: there should be some model for forking .. it was used to predict oil streams in wells Rolling Eyes

Found some code for laplacian growth simulation : https://www.cc.gatech.edu/grads/m/mluffel/2009/fall/cs7001/dendrites/

Will now try to make something with that :-)
