Hmm .. yeah .. not watching this the whole day.

Anyways, there is no /need/ to get an external soundcard, there however are reports of PortAudio not liking some built-in audio device drivers under Win10.

There is not much I can do about this, however you can try to install ASIO4ALL to see if that helps.

I have made a debugging setup to try to zoom in on the driver issues .. it adds loads of PortAudio debug info to the wren_debug.log file.

https://bluehell.nl/wren/modules.2020.5.30.debug.zip

Please copy the contents to a unique directory to not mess up any original stuff, run wren_debug.exe and when issues seen please attach the file wren_debug.log here to a reply.

Hope this will help to zoom in a bit on the problems.

Edit: fixed the log file name.

Oh - yes ..

it gets named after the exe file .. so it's not wren.log for the debug version .. but wren_debug.log .. sorry about that.

Ok, thanks!

It looks like it has some issues with using the "primary sound capture driver", and then it stops the audio altogether ... but looks like it is opening the ouput for audio ok.

So ... what would happen when you select no input at all? you might have to redo the istallation for that or edit the ini file .. whichever seems easier for you to do .. as I forgot to put an option in to select <nothing> .. it should work though with <nothing>

or, when you select the microphone as the input instead of that capture thing?

-- ok -- let me bundle up stuff a bit here ---

I can ope the primary capture thingie just fine here btw, and this laptop also has a realtek built-in sound device.

----

Hmm .. but I do have my laptop's microphone disabled.

----

Ah there is a way to select <nothing>

select a different API to use, then switch back to direct sound, and select no input but an output only.

----

But it still opens an input then ...

----

Aha .. select wasapi ... then select no input or output devices .. then accept that and quit wren without trying to let it make sound.

Next start wren agai, select direct windows directsound again, and select no input but do select an output .. ok that and quit wren, again without trying to let it make sound.

Open wren again, and check the audio devices selected, there should be no input device selected now, keep it that way.

Then try to make a simple patch, like an oscillator directly into an output module, and hit F9 to start audio output .. it may be loud when it works :-)

----

Let me know what happens please ... and when it does not work I'd like to see a log file again.

And for the next release there will be an option to properly select <nothing> for input or output or both ... although nothing will work when both are <nothing> .. hmm that seems just about right (:-)

Hmm .. okay .. I do not quite understand that .. but for the next release I have made it possible to explicitely select <nothing> for the input and for the output.

I can give you a pre-release to see if that helps .. do you prefer a 64 or a 32 bit version?

Maybe change the buffer size .. for DirectSound maybe use 4096 - this can be done in the Wave device selection screen at the bottom. For ASIO the buffer size is ignored BTW and it should be set trough the ASIO control panel then.

This will add quite some latency, but it might just work.

Setting 0 for the buffer size leaves the buffer size selection to PortAudio.

Also .. the debug version is quite slow, so better do not use that one, it was meant for diagnosing the audio issues only.

Oh and Wasapi may perform better, or ASIO ;-)

I never really tried Windows WDM-KS .. but I think that is what Asio4all is based upon .. hmm just tried it .. the specified buffer size seems to be ignored for KS.

For DirectSound setting the buffer size does work, in that it changed the latency (as expected).

all i can use now is directsound if i change to other option wasapi, mme or wdm-ks i got error again and there is no sound..turning back to direct sound gives sound again lol

i changed buffer to 4096..it is better but there are still some crackles ..much less then before but no clean audio yet..

also how can i check if i have 32 or 46 bit wren ? my win10 is 64 bit so i guess 64 bit wren would be better to work with..
