Here's a word of warning.
Next time you think you might be able to engrave perspex, by hand, with a Dremel, neatly,........
T h i n k a g a i n ! ! !
Didn't I say that there had to be a major f@!k up about to happen soon? My luck with DIY was just too good for too long!! Well, it was an unmittigated disaster! No, not really a disaster. Nothing I can't fix. But hand engraving is not on my list of proficiencies! That's alright, I can't be perfect at everything!
I kind of half expected it to go pear shaped. But I wasn't afraid to try, that's how you find out what your capabilities are, (and how much respect professional engravers deserve)
So now I have to work out how to transfer labeling to perpex in a way that my lights will light it up. Or, drop the LED lighting concept and explore another style of front panel. I've already started on the latter for the ASM-2 but I'd still like to light up the SoundLab.
I thought about Press-N-Peel and something which will craze perpex. But how to remove the Press-N-Peel? There's a company up north that does computerised engraving on perpex, but it could be expensive.
I s'pose at least now I get to re-space all the controls on the new front panel! _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

Andrew,
Sorry to hear about your misadventure
Why not just stencil fluorescent pen or paint onto the perspex from behind and illuminate it with UV LED's?
As I also pointed out in another post somewhere else, perspex is a bit of a fine art- having once worked with it. The final results- if done well- can be stunning, provided one knows EXACTLY what they are doing!!
The weather in this country is hot enough to melt perspex (the met office are predicting 37.5 degrees C today- phew!! What a scorcher!! ) - I suppose it's still winter in Aussie?- Time for an short exodus there!!!! _________________ ACHTUNG!

Hi Andrew sorry to hear about your engravings. - - but the good news is that now your DIY-luck can turn back to success
Today i did also some perspex work and it was hard, my dremel runs on so high speed that the perspex starts melting and the drill gets stuck. is there some solution to the melting thing? maybe slower speed i know but then the power is not enough.. well the end result is fine enough for me.
pics coming soon and maybe some video material also... i got a old travel-TV and moded it to display audio signals .. but more on it tomorrow (on circuit bending forum).
good night

You can try to cool with a liquid, maybe water maybe oil, see what works best (if at all) ... only thing is you'll need three hands then I guess _________________ Jan

I find that in a situation like that, if the plastic melts, you've got too much speed for the rate at which you're cutting. Or, to put it another way, you're cutting too slowly for the speed of the tool. If you quickly touch the tool to the surface, it will cut. If you hang around too long, the heat can't escape fast enough and it starts to melt. Sometimes, I know, it's not that simple. Give it a try. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

Well here is the latest development.
I've re-made the front panel. It's now a plate of 2mm aluminium with a layer of Tasmanian Blackwood iron on veneer. To this I ironed down the artwork for the panel using an inkjet T-shirt transfer.
I can say without a doubt that you should only try this if you are desperate and not very picky about the finish. As it turns out a bit cloudy and has an uneven and unpredictable finish. But after fixing some of the bits which didn't transfer and giving it all a coat of polyurethane, it's not actually that bad. It kind of looks old and rough and,... well that's how it's gonna stay,....like an instant antique. You need to know when to let go, accept the imperfections and take what you've learned on to the next project, the ASM-2.
It's going to have a Blackwood and aluminium front panel as well, but I've found the wonders of Lazertran to replace the T-shirt transfer.
BTW the original perspex with lit up labeling is still going ahead as an option, but I'm doing some research into the cost of laser engraving first.

Nice job! Looks great, and I can't wait to hear it.
I just realized that I bought my Sound Lab board back in April... and I still haven't put a single component into it... |

Andrew, what are you going to use that spare area for?
My guess is for a VC delay unit?
Anyone else up for guessing?
PS, it looks lovely _________________ ACHTUNG!

Well- I've now boarded the loft- and right this minute I'm on a coffee break between stages of knocking the old plaster from the cupboard that leads to the attic. Gonna need a hot bath soon as my hair is caked in all this orange brick dust and crap. It's amazing what one finds in old plaster! Horse hair, pebbles, and what smells like 100+ years of talc and perfume that the walls have absorbed!!!!! _________________ ACHTUNG!

That spare area at the bottom right is where the patch points can eventually go when I work out what I want. Just enough for some CVs and an alternate mixer in, etc. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

It's Exocet. I like it a lot.
I've gone for a more classic synth font on the Sorcerer though. A combination of Quartzite and Helvetica Neue.
I'm kind of discovering a new angle to DIY projects. The whole front panel design process has suddenly opened up to me. It's something I really enjoy. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |
